I've discovered "Rise Of Nations" recently which is a good real time strategy game like Age of Kings.
I also occasionally play Unreal Tournament 2004 (online multiplayer futuristic first person perspectove shooting game) when I'm not downloading anything.
I'm looking for new ones to try so...
What are you guys playing? Can you also mention what kind of game it is please.

Medieval : Total War - An absolute masterpiece, probably moved in to second place (behind the Civilization series - not the lamentably poor activision call to power ones though) as my most played strategy game. State Of Emergency - old skool frantic arcade action with fancy 3rd person graphics (and come one, you can blow a fed's head off with a shotgun then pick up the head & beat the rest of the cops to death with it

). Duke Nukem : Manhatten Project - why isn't anyone making side scrolling shooters any more ? Age of Wonders 2 - cos I like turn based strategy but have played virtually everything else to death. Temple of Elemental Evil - not really playing, just storing it on my HDD until I get a decent mobo & CPU, cos it runs like a one legged horse on my machine, but it's the best implementation of the D & D system in a game so far IMHO just cos of the turn based combat (real time combat in RPGs - who the fuck thought that would work ? it's got to be turn based, it is in the tabletop version). Fifa 2003 cos fifa 2004/PES definitely won't run on my bag of shite, and I've gotta get the swiss referee out of my system somehow (second thoughts, that's what state of emergency's for). Descent- Freespace2 - just downloaded it, not played it yet, ditto X-Com : Apocalypse.
Oh, and Jedi Knight.
And Serious Sam.
And Star Wars - Rogue Squadron.
Spent the week having a bit of an Emule party, I go through periods when I've got nothing installed, and periods when I DL every game I can think of. Roll on the end of August - should have the dollars for an upgrade

Can't remember the last time I played a 'new' game.

Ninja gaiden on the X-Box is the best at the moment. Also like Fight Night 2004 and Need for Speed Underground.
Viewtiful Joe on the Gamecube is very original, and I can't get tired with MarioKart.
currently playing FarCry (currently the best FPS on PC if your system can handle it), although given that Doom3 is out in the US in a month (and available on broadband shortly afterwards

), I am working on getting through Farcry before it comes out. Then there is Half Life 2 to look forward to

Downloaded Perimeter a couple of days ago. Not played any RTS games for ages, and its really good, but right rat bastard hard (took me over 8 hours to complete one of the levels - 7 or 8 I think AFTER I dropped the difficulty down to easy)

Currently replaying FarCry on the hardest mode (finished it on standard)
Hitman 3 - not bad with some nice touches to it.
Thief 3 - gave up on it , it ran brilliantly but those Authentic Medieval American Accents annoyed the crap outa me!
Splinter Cell pandora , currently working my way through it , good fun , looks great
I still play Operation Flashpoint religiously , at least once a day.
Anyone know if you can played the copied version of Joint operations online?

Thief - probably the most overrated, overhyped game series ever. Thief 1 was shit, wow a game that introduces stealth - badly. Original ideas are worthless if they don't actually work, and the stealth in thief was atrocious - spend ages tiptoeing around, making sure all the torches are extinguished just for all the guards to home directly in on you hiding behind a barrel in a pitch dark room. Then a little later blithely wandering straight past them in a light room with no carpet & a corpse in your arms

And the hand to hand combat
I can't really recall any stealth games that have actually worked, the metal gear solid series, now I come to think of it, pips thief to the most overrated & overhyped games series, take out the hours of appalingly cheezy dialogue & cut scenes & you're left with about ten minutes of gameplay. Make up your mind, do you want to make a game or a movie... I reckon the only game I ever played where the stealth came close to working was deus ex.

The only game I play online is the iL2 Forgotten battles world war 11 combat flight sim. This game has been around for about 5 years. The developer 1C Maddox do it for Ubi and they always release new patches to update the game. It has a hardcore following and I'd say its the best flight sim out there. Even if you are a veteran combat flight sim person this game is hard because the flight models for the planes are amazing. Real high learning curve, very difficult to get good but very satisfying when you get it right.

| Boojum how on earth do you play medieval on a old system?? I used to, but ended up tearing my hair out on the battle screens. |
I usually play it with a few smokes, and take a long time over battles. I generally pause it before issuing any orders (other than moving the army into position), and once my archers have engaged, or I'm charging my spearmen (with a couple of units of shock troops hidden in the trees

) I generally pause to skin up

. Even at the height of battle it doesn't slow down too much or get too choppy, unless there's allies, routing troops leaving & reinforcements assembling at the same time. I haven't tried multiplayer cos I like to take my time. It ran like a 3 legged donkey when I first DL'd it, so bad that I deleted it from my HDD, but I've found some more stable drivers for my gfx & sound cards, and defragged & optimised my swap file. Now I've ditched the dealer, I reckon I'm about a month away from an upgrade myself, can't wait.
& yeah, I can't wait for Rome (hopefully I'll have a phat enough system), but I hope the AI is better than that which was implemented on the embarassingly bad time commanders on BBC2.
Now looking at time commanders i thought the AI was much improved over Medieval. There sure are taking there time, hope they get it all right.
When you get your upgrade, try upping the troop sizes, the field looks awesome with the largest unit sizes. Although Royal Knights don't get any bigger (20) so i generally just use them for chasing down routing troops
Too addcitive

Jul 2 2004, 02:19 PM

far too addictive. Dunno if I like the idea of bigger units but still only 19 royal knights, they're my favourite unit. Their speed plus their attack makes them lethal in wedge formation on the flanks (or if they aren't your generals unit, hidden in trees to charge the rear of the enemy as it passes) Kataphracts are good, to - hard as nails, am playing a campaign at the moment & losing ground to the byzantine cos of their bloody cataphracts - only way I've found to deal with them is to use a mix of kerns & mounted archers, draw them away from the main army, then surround them with missile troops, they're just too bloody hard in melee.
What's the point of dismounting before battle, do you know? I know some units (like teutonic knights) can do it if you press something on the army/reinforcement screen at the start of the battle, but I don't see the point - you wnat your cavalry to be on their horses, surely
Favourite unit has to be the grand inquisitor, though - France is aflame with roasting heretics, and I've just condemned the dauphin. Now if only my spy can discover something juicy about King Louis, he's far too pious
Although all that zeal makes a crusade via France first a tempting prospect.
Far too addictive.
Know what ya meant about them Kataphraktoi, just wait and see what the Egyptians and turkish got (Kwarzmiam cavalry) and the Golden Hordes Heavy cavalry will also give you grief. The high period is good if you can get swiss armoured pike, mash them heavy's up
As for dismounting, i have found this useful for defending bridges when i have no other spears in the province or sometimes on a hill, especially if your opponent has many spears. Also horses don't like the trees, so if you think your enemy might have his troops in the trees, it takes away this disadvantage.
To dismount you right click on the unit before you press start battle.
Don't you think it's rather annoying when you stay onside with the Pope only for him to take an invading armies side against you when you have done no wrong?
Basically i sent in a army to relieve a siege and i got excommunicated
Don't ya love it when they attack your big castles??? Get a load of my siege cannon towers
Just sitting there watching while their army gets mashed up.

, managed to upgrade our stand (The Krop), but Boojum failed to notice that the promotion bonus was in euros, not pounds

so I've had to spend all last week flogging off my best players. Now I'm joint bottom and my supporters are leaving the club in droves cos I've yet to win a match this season.
Fairly addictive game, I'd say

I like those too.
Played sim city for ages and ages on my old amiga. Sim city 4 was a bit slow though I think the programmers are getting sloppy.
The Sims I also played for ages but it gets a bit annoying, the house building etc.. bit of it is cool but spending so much time trying to keep and make friends seemed artificially hard and took the fun out of the game, at least for me.

I think some modder should come up with a sims herb grower mod. Build a stealth grow room in a closet, keep other sims from finding it, as your grow increases build a loft extension, different value plants like they value furniture items, and the differnet 'strains' either increase energy if they are sats, or increase happiness but also make you tired if indica. Course EA wouldn't be too happy.

you should do a search for a game called Enemy Nations , it's a bit like sim city crossed with command and conquer , it's quite an old game but it's totally free to download, basically the developers went bust just after the game's release so they decided to to release it as freeware . Yay, my birthday, and I'm hoping to get my upgrade bits this week so my system should cope with it too. I've been waiting for this for bloody years, there's no way it'll get close to living up to expectations, I just hope it's not too disappointing (last game I was anticipating this much was the unholy abortion that was daikatana - if doom3 is that bad I think I'll bin my PC and go live in a cave)

Did you see the alpha release about 2 years ago?
even then, in its cut down, buggy as fuck form the graphics blew away anything I have ever seen and have still not been beaten. The physics engine was great, and the lighting and sound effects added to the atmosphere a huge amount
And more importantly - even in that state the game scared me so much that I was avoiding opening doors because I could hear nastiness behind them, and was hesitant as anything wandering into areas where it was dark, incase something jumped out at me

We shall all find out in a fortnight I reckon

Personally I can't wait. I bought my first PC for the sole purpose of playing the original Doom. ID have never fucked up yet really, and I still have faith in them

That's what we want - just recalling the sound of a cyberdemon howling just round the corner, or the grunt of one of those invisible pig/pitbull/baboon things still sends shivers down my spine - only game that's come close (FPS game, anyway) to that was half life, and HL2's out soon too. I hope it's gonna be a pant-wettingly scary autumn

PS I really hope they keep the chainsaw, and I could be wrong, but though it was appropriated by quake, didn't the Big Fucking Gun 110 make it's first appearence in doom? Big gibs, bigger explosions & enormous frights, that's what we want - and relentless hordes of enemies too, that to me is what's been missing from FPS games (except maybe the serious sam games) - a room literally full of nasties, cutting bloody swathes through the ranks of the damned with a minigun
Oooooh, I'm right excited, me
