Bit of shame that wasn't it? It could have been brilliant but turned out to be boring and with no decent multiplayer game they killed it's longevity.
As long as someone writes a pro-mode multiplayer mod for q4, then I'll be happy.

I really love the UT2004 bombing run mode. American football with big guns & no downs

It's especially fun to fire the ball at an opponent then eviscerate him with your flak cannon when he catches it

Just got Black & White 2. For those who dont know, its a god game where you get to train and develop a giant creature.
To be perfectly honest, not much has changed from bw1, the tutorial is still painfully slow and the 'helpers' (saint and devil, good and bad conscience are terribly annoying). The biggest difference is villager combat and I havent used it much so far.
The creature is a lot less random in this version however and his training method has been simplified quite abit, although the monkey is not as cute as it used to be and he looks a bit like a deformed baby.
Defo worth a look if you have never played the first game and if you liked the first game then it may be worth playing with. However, people who didnt get anything out of the first are not likely to be swayed by this.
Still playing Battlefield 2 as well, is there a UK420 clan? Im shit but enthusiastic.

I found B & W to be the singularly most disappointing game I've ever played (even more of a let down than doom3). I liked the first level, where you got introduced to the creature, the world etc, and the silver & gold story scrolls, but found the subsequent levels (once you get sucked through the vortex) to be utterly dull - micromanagement nightmare with a naughty child running round eating your villagers & crapping in the grain store. I'd have preferred to just keep teaching the creature & have had no control over the villagers building etc at all. I gave up on world 2 cos I just didn't enjoy it. Reviews I've read suggest that the micromanagement in B & W 2 has been toned down a bit, which sounds good, but on the flipside creature training is a lot easier & less intuitive cos it tells you what the creature is thinking. I may check it out - can't fault Peter Molyneux for trying, though, he invented the god game with populous & at least he's attempting summat different, even if he didn't quite pull it off with B & W 1.

If your a molineux fan Booj, you may be interested in 'Movies' coming out next month I think. From what Ive heard, its a bit like the Sims, but you have to create movies, will probably be wank lie most things that molineux gives himself a hernia hyping over, but I do like it when devs try to do something a bit unusual.
If your after a copy of bw2 the best place is the #rapeus channel on MIRC. theyve got loads of bots serving it. all the torrents I tried were hella slow and I got my copy in about 5 hours.
Fahrenheit is a good game, if a little short, and the storyline goes a bit fucked up towards the end. Well worth a look though as I think it will set a trend for computer games/interactive movies.
One game thats on the horizon and has me more excited than a nun in ann summers is 'Spore'. devised by Will Wright (the sims). You start off as a single cell creature and gradually evolve however you choose, apparently, if you want 9 legs and tusks or 4 wings and 9 eyes, you can. I hope this one lives up to the hype....

Metaboli is a new(?) french (spit) site that is pretty cheap and allows downloads of a lots of games, DS DSII prince of persia, Neverwinter wends(????) + about 60 others. Games that are multiplayer you can log on and join a team.
Only draw back is that after a download you have to paly game through thier player which doesnt alter game a jot (have got DS now on disc so can compair), but unfortunatley in single player mode you have to be online so they can apportion the money they get to the various software houises.

Rome total war : barbarian invasion. Mixed feelings. Like the new factions & look of the interface, but the AI doesn't seem any better despite what the reviews say, and the campaign is extremely short (mainly due to the fact that each faction has spoecific goals, greatly reducing the options for expansion and probably replay value too). Also yet to see the much lauded night battles, I've played one campaign game right to the end and didn't get a single general able to do a night attack

New horde thingy seems cool, though, can lead to some heroic defences, had a full army with half an army of reinforcements next to it defend a bridge from 6 consecutive attacks of a full army each of huns in a single turn

If they'd have had one more army, even with just a couple of units of peasants in, to attack one final time they'd have had me

General went from 1 star to 6 stars in one turn

Also promotes non general army commanders to family member on a good victory far more frequently. It's good, it just seems like more of a reduction than an expansion, the campaign just feels smaller and seems to be over far faster. Have only played as 2 factions though, and the horde factions and the declining roman empire factions look to be a lot different in how they play. Frankish axemen rock, they throw axes before chrging like the scutari type units with their javelins, but they got more range do you don't get hit by charging enemy while still throwing, and they do massive damage

with a huge followup charge bonus for the axemen

Coupla hours into quake 4. Have to admit I'm enjoying it (had grave doubts after doom 3, dreadfully disappointing game), but that could be because now ID have showcased how visually stunning the engine can be, and how well it does things emerging surprisingly from the shadows, they can now get on with the business of actually making a game (doom3 felt like some long, protracted hardware demo or summat - whoo hoo, look at the real time shadows cast by that fireball, yes very nice, but after the thirty-odd imps previous that have materialised out of nowhere and done it, it kinda loses the impact). Felt a bit like halo 1.5 at first, that opening sequence is very hackneyed, but once going it's a fairly decent single player shooter, don't add owt but not a total disappointment. Still doesn't 'feel' very quake4, though, yeah it's the stroggs, and yeah some of the enemies from quake2 have been kinda revamped, but this just lacks the same feel (much of which was down to the music IMHO, but I was also fond of the kinda grainy graphics). They've got the big robot dudes with the hammer & spike, but they just aint the same cos they don't scream "trespasser" when they see you like in quake2. And no sound of the troops round the corner cocking their weapons like in Q2. Bit too much going round with other squad members, too (but at least they aren't utterly stupid so not too much of a liability) - just get the feeling that in trying to be like other games (most notably halo) it's kinda forgotten to be that much like quake 2, which it is in essence the sequel to. And it's the haloesque bits that don't work - the vehicle bit (only done one so far but I assume there's more) and the squad based missions.
School report would read final grade C - must stop trying to copy the other children and just be itself, concentrate on it's own strengths and forget what everyone else is doing. Would jump over a cliff if the other children did.
Oh, and cos it's the D3 engine, it requires a monster PC, but also cos it's the D3 engine, all the console performance tweaks for doom3 also work for quake 4

I was a bit disappointed with Q4, it gets a bit monotonous after a while just like Doom 3 did.
COD2 on the other hand, is fantastic and really engrossing albeit a bit too short.
Been wasting my time with Freelancer. I like certain aspects of the game but there is a precise storyline which means you have to perform at a certain level to pass a particular stage, But the engine reads your status and always make it so that you can only just do it. At a later stage the same 'bandits' act differently because engine has read your abilities so the same foes at different times have different strenghts. This makes it too forced and rigid and manipuplated. Have given it neck at moment cause I want to play the game not be forced into a straight jacket by the program. I don't want to be aware of the program really, and you are, constantly. Still as I'm new to moderncomputer games it wasn't bad as a second game. Got to level 14 using a touchpad, realize I need a joystick now as the game goes to levell 38 I think and have got to point that I cant get any more out of touchpad in terms of performance.

Hmmm. Civ4 first impressions... well, I installed it just after posting my last message in this thread, and just started it for a little look, and now it's 3 am, so that's a good sign

.
Looks fantastic, and the animation of the combat is brill, I like the way they've chosen to go for cartoony over realism, first time I saw the macemen in action I nearly fell off my chair laughing

Leaders animations during negotiation are funny too, catherine the great is well flirty & slaps you if you offer a crap deal, and I think montezuma isn't too HP with me at the mo, cos whenever I negotiate with him he just stands there with his face in his hands

.
Gameplay wise, seems fairly civ, the culture from civ3 has stayed, and there's religion now, but I still haven't quite worked out how that works. Also seems to be a new wonders system, and heroic characters that can appear and be used up building special wonders, triggering a golden age etc. Seems very quick, though, even playing on epic speed, half an hour and you're up to feudalism & building war elephants. Also unit building has been vastly slowed, so no chucking out a phalanx a turn from every city, war requires a hell of a lot of forward planning.
All in all it looks like it could really be deserving of the title, though obviously I'm gonna have to test it some more
The tutorial's a bit naff, though, evein if it does feature a virtual Sid Meier.

Im steering well clear of this one, last time I picked up a Civ game I lost 2 years of my life.
I would if you value your social life, having played it a bit more now I can safely say it's a life stealer. What a game

All the bits that have been tweaked have been tweaked for the better, religion works well, the new civics are excellent, combat is vastly improved. There's been loads of moaning about bugs but I haven't noticed any, though it is hugely resource demanding, specially later stage when the whole world is revealed. Though the resources are put to ecellent use, it's a gorgeous looking game, that gets better looking the more you play it cos at the start it's difficult to tell what's what, but once you get used to the visual style the level of detail is incredible. You can zoom all the way out, google earth stylee, til the world (or however much of the map is revealed) is there as a globe, clouds & all, or you can zoom all the way in to see the pigs in their pen on a square, or seals on a tile containing them, or any of the many other resources. Stunning game. Lest it were ever in doubt I hereby salute Sid Meier as a genius

And now I'm back off to the game, time to teach Peter the Great that although I, as Gandhi, am by nature a pacifist, it aint a good idea to fuck with me when I've got ironclads and the only sources of coal and oil on the continent
Now then, where's those buddhist missionaries I stacked for just this eventuality, off you go, spread the word of Buddha to the heathen Russians so there's less culture clash and so they take less pacifying when I march into their cities.
Mwa ha ha ha.
