Full Version: Air Circulation While The Lamps Are Off

Hi all, With the weather getting colder now im wondering if it advivesable to turn off my Carbon filter air system.

My lamps come on at 4pm and off at 4am, if i leave my air circulation on while the lamps are off the temp drops to about 10 degrees during sleep time, if i turn off the air circulation whilest lamps off the temp will drop to about 16 degrees.

I obviously have air inlets into the grow room and im hoping that there should be enough air to keep the plants happy, what do you guys think???

I run my light during the day fella that enables me to pot about if need be..

My light goes off at 8pm-8am and during this time I have my intake attached to an oil filled radiator set at half hour on half hour off and this keeps the temps at lights off btw 72/74f.

You need to have your fans running 24/7 fella.

Goodluck.

I keep my extraction on 24/7 mate cool.gif

A few reasons really. Firstly the smell. If I turn my extraction off then any smell which would normally be filtered through the carbon filter will just hang around and deep into flower it would end up stinking. Secondly, deep into flower my temperatures wont drop below 20C on a night so big wet buds and no air circulation in my room would only lead to bud rot and/or other problems for my plants. Thirdly and probably most importantly for the plants, they still need to breath during lights out and air circulation is the only way to achieve this.

I can see your problem with the low temperatures mind. What my friend does is use a couple of oil filled radiators bought from most places (arrghhgos) and I am sure he has them on some kind of temperature control. i.e - The radiators are set to come on at 18C and turn off at 20C . Granted all night they switch on for 30 minutes and then off for 30 minutes but it works for him. (E2A - and P&Q by the looks of it yinyang.gif )

I only have my fans on when lights are on. In all my time growing I havent had any problems. I did try using the fans 24/7 but there was no differance after a few crops so just went back to fans on when lights on.

as they say the choice is yours. you could put them on a timer so that they come on for 15 mins every couple of hours to clear the room if your worried about humidity and big wet buds. But in all 4 rooms I have done this has never been a problem even in a room jam packed with plants in heavy flowering.

Get an oil filled rad.

You run the risk of lsf etc and also smell leakage if you do not run 24/7.

Thanks for the info guys, i got an oil rad in the grow room just in case the temp does fall too much, im just trying to find a way of keeping temps in a reasonable range, and the cheapest way (my leccy bill is £140 per month) so i was trying to keep all unnessary electric waste to a min.

I might just follow nu jerzey devil's advice (put the extration on a timer) just to get a bit of fresh air in every hr or so, see how that goes......

leaf spot fungus, not nice to have in your grow room.

yea man i run mine 24/7 it won't hurt them if the temp drops 10degrees, but then again I'm in the u.s.a. And its 74 degrees and sunny. peace

I run mine 15 mins every couple of hours lights off when in veg-they like the extra humidity I think, but when in flower it s on full time

you can slow your fan down, but not off, at lights off. you'll still need a heater, an oil filled rad will have a built in thermostat, if the fans slower it wont have to be on so much to keep the temps up.

i personally use a little greenhouse fan heater from homebase, bit expensive at 27 quid, could probably pick one up cheaper though. heats the room up quicker than a rad, and keeps the temps more stable. and it's designed for use in damp places, ie greenhouses (says so on the box, so if anything bad happens im gonna sue the fuckers! lol.gif) so no worries there

So what would be general concensus Oil radiator vs Greenhous heater by efficiency and power consumption? I mean with all that out take ventilation in tent not sure how much it helps unsure.gif
scraglor
efficiency is exactly the same, a 1000w fan heaterr uses 1000w and gives out 1000w of heat, a 1000w oil heater, uses a 1000w and gives out 1000w of heat........ a fan heater just works much faster and turns off quicker because it doesn't have to heat up/cool down a load of oil first. also a fan heater blows the warm air around and heats the whole area up quickly, a raditor has to wait for the heat to convect around the area, but either will work just as good, once the rooms at around the temp you want. so horses for courses

Not true at all, any less than 18-20c and you can start to see nutes getting locked out, mainly N, you see it every year when the cold weather kicks in, peoples plants start to yellow as he rootzone temps below 18-20c.

Also you want it on 24/7 to deal with humidity, the humidity gives fungal spores a greater chance, it also causes budrot late in flower if its to high.

Airflow is a major major factor in keeping plants healthy and happy.

I personally use convector heaters, reason being they heat up instantly, kick out mega heat and a silent unlike the fan heaters which are also instant and kick out mega heat but can be a little noisey.

The other reason I prefer a standard cheap convector like this one hxxp://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/4151144/Trail/searchtext%3ECONVECTOR+HEATER.htm which I think is great and good value considering its a decent make is that it doesn't have any neon lights on it so no pissing about trying to remove the neon thumbsup.gif

Mine run for 24/7 - if you turn them of you loose the benefits the filter brings to the table - the smell will waft around freely, with fan on 24/7 all air in the room has to exit via the filter

Can you use those convection heaters on their side ?

Cheers

dont think so some have a swithch that turn them off if the fall over ?

dont put convection heaters on their side ever!!!! they'll over heat very quickly, most will have a thermal cutout, and once it breaks, the thing wont work again, if the thermal cutout fails (unlikely but possible) then you've got a lovely grow room fire on your hands. a convection heater needs to convect the heat away, and heat goes up, not sideways
scraglor
littel fan heater i got from homebase and is totally silent, and can be set at 1kw or 2kw of heat, which is more than enough for any percy grow room. plus a thermostat to set your temp. really pleased with it

Thanks scrag
