Full Version: Should Newly Sprouted Seedlings Go Straight Under Hps?

Yush all, it's lovely to know I'm not the only one attempting to grow their own. I just started, bought two strains and started them from seed. LSD and Temple Haze.
I'm a haze lover and do love indica/sativa crosses so i thought I'd give these strains a whirl. I'm new to this by the way. Hot a 400 W Hps lamp on the go in a metre high cabinet with extractor fan and another to suck in air.
The seedlings I had, pushed through and were about and inch out before I decided to stick them under the light. The Hazes seem to be thriving, lapping it up but the LSDs wilted and a couple of them died. I managed to rescue one from five seedlings but had to take it out from under the light. I know it's indica dominant and the Haze seems to be fine, so I was wondering if anyone else had this happen to them.
I'm growing in rockwool grodan cubes waiting for the roots to poke through to the sides before I stick them in an NFT system.

Funny thing is, I had a red string thai seed which I stuck in your average levy's compost in a pot and that's growing really fast.

Anyway, I'm also doing this because the cost of buying is ridicularse and I like growing veg anyways. I'm trying not to smoke till I actually get a decent harvest in!

Lots of love, Mestizo

How high do you have the light?
soul stripper
keep the light 3 feet above seedlings. thats what i do.

New seedlings, as well as new clones, are very sensitive. As mentioned keep the light 3 feet away or put the young uns around the edge of the beam spread from your lamp.

you only need cfl's or flourescent tubes for seedlings... I grow mine in a propagator with a pair of 11w tubes lying on the plastic cover, warm damp and bright enough

2 1/2 - 3 feet should be fine for the seedlings. I did it under a 400w hps recently and it worked out well.

Some may correct me but a 400w in a cabinet only 1m high??? pinch.gif sounds like the space is too small and the seedlings cooked a bit under the 400w. like i say i might be wrong but personally in that space id go for 2 x 125w cfls or a 250w cfl or even 250 hps but i had a space double the height of yours and the temps were off the scale with my 400w. HPS bulbs are like a mini sun.

Any idea of temps in the cabinet when light is on? anything above 30 for long periods will cook even a mature plant, seedlings dont stand a chance. If its not high temps then not a clue. if it is temps then go with lower wattage hps or cfls and try increasing the size of the extract fan and making any passive intake holes a bit bigger to increase air exchange and reduce temps.

Welcome to UK420 and good luck with your grow. Keep us posted. spliff.gif

Thanks everyone. I've had the lamp way too low by the sounds of things. I can raise and lower the light and I did have it about 12 inches above. I thought I had probably cooked them so I raised the light to two foot, but now I'm gonna raise it to 3 feet. You all reckon 3 ft and I will make it so, Picard style. Tomorrow I'm gonna extend the height of my cabinet by building a frame for the bottom. The dimensions of the cabinet at the moment are 1m high, 1m width, 50 cm depth. Am aiming to raise it up a metre. Depth is a bit of an issue with the space I've got to work with. Got the feeling I'm gonna have to start again, but I'll give it a week, see how things go.
Temperature in the cabinet is 19 degrees C minimum and the hottest I've recorded has been 23 C, which I didn't think was too bad. The temp. doesn't fluctuate, that was just when I had the light to low.
Anyways, massive respect to all of you for taking the time to advise. I'm totally feeling growing. Peace and love and smoke.

Everything is working out fine so far. Temple Haze strains seem to be flourishing. The one LSD plant is doing well also. I've got a little runt of an LSD in there, but even that seems to be slowly improving. The hazes are definitely doing well, roots poking out, will hopefully stick in an NFT system in couple of weeks or possibly less. Had been over feeding, but now checking weight of grow medium to see if they've been drinking it and they've been smashing that fluid.
It's nice, I've been saying "excellent" like Mr Byrnes everytime I have a peak. Thinking about starting a grow diary.
Excellent!
