Full Version: Reducing Rhino Filter Noise

at the moment i have a DR100 with ruck 150L & rhino 150/600 filter.

im getting whoosh/extraction noise from the filter.

im thinking to cure this by changing the filter to the 8" version.

im thinking the more surface area will cause less "drag" noise through the filter?

or mabe even getting a 6" Y & using a pair of 6" filters, for even more surface area?

any thoughts on this? or comments? or what you think would be best?

oh, i do slow the ruck fan via a variac also, but to keep temps nice, & i still get suction noise.

Rhino really need to sort this out, I had to downgrade my fan to a rvk a1 because of the whooshing it makes with anything higher powered.

Sorry I can't offer any help on the 2 6" or 1 8" thing.

You could try adding a smallish length of ducting between the fan and filter if you haven't done that already.

Alternatively, you could have the CF on the outside of the tent and have the fan blowing air into it.

i have a length between the fan & filter...

im a firm follower of you should suck through the filter & not blow through.

Going up to 8" will reduce noise, because it reduces velocity. The CF will stay effective longer too.

i don't really think rhino can 'sort out' the laws of physics!!

Hi Floopy

ive got the same set up, 1m tent, same fan & cf.

i went for the variac method & its been excellent for cutting the whooshing noise down,
now its no longer sounding like a jump jet taking off, i can even sleep in the same room with
the variac set to 40% & the fans are barely audible, i also use 2 of the side vents for intake
& its keeping a nice negative pressure.

at 40% your fan is probably only flowing about 10m3/hr though. barely moving

agreed, but with the fan turned up much more, the filter woosh is loud.

scraglor, do you think if i used a Y & 2 6" filters it will reduse the woosh?

more surface area/less woosh through the one filter? as the air will be spread
over the pair of filters, plus this might mean i could turn the fan up more/faster...

you'd be putting a hell of a strain on your tent roof with 2 filters plus fan, reflector etc unsure.gif , sounds like a valid idea though tbh smile.gif

I'm not asking them to mate, just work around them maybe by increasing surface area and creating less drag, if they're adertising something of being capabe of having 500m3 airflow but it 'whoos' like a very noisy ghost when it goes above 300 then maybe its original use as a way of disguising a grow has become defunct.

thing is, carbon filters aren't specifically for cannabis, they're used throughout industry, where they're designed for ridding the air of smells, air particulates. noise isn't a concern. the flow rating is the rating that the filter is effective for removing smells. if they increase the surface area, then the filter will be effective at removing smells at a higher flow rate, as the effectiveness of the carbon for removing smells, is directly related to the air speed through the filter, so they'd just advertise a higher flowrate for that particular filter. if you want a slower flowrate, buy and oversized filter for your fan

doubling up on filters will work yes, it'll reduce the noise a fair bit providing your fan has a fair length of ducting in between the filter and the fan intake. but truth is you'll always get some noise. one of the reasons i don't like grow tents, because they offer no noise insulation

I wonder how much of their business is done with people wanting to remove pollen etc from nurseries?

Apparently the larger carbon pellets will reduce the drag and whoosh noise, I think I'll give them a go and compare.
