ive used a cheapy one from B+Q before with the required effect, its only about 4 or 5 inchs wide but around 2foot long, it had a green bottom section and a clear upper, all i did was put some potting compost into small peat plugs popped in my germed seeds and stuck a flouro ontop - sorted
whole thing only cost about a tenner

if you have a sunny windowsill then leaving it on that could also work

they work by making a micro climate inside, humidity goes up and makes the seedlings feel right at home

Most garden centres and grow shops sell a decent range. If budget allows go for a heated unit, if you have a little more money go for an adjustable heated unit. This allows you to experiment over time with the best temp. If you cannot go for a heated unit just yet buy a standard unit and add a heater mat to the underneath later. You can get the heater mats from your local pet shop(reptile heater mats). Make sure you get a unit with vents in the lid as you will need to "harden off" cuttings and seedlings gently over a period of time. If all else fails buy a cheap seed tray and make yourself a cover. I've used wire from coathangers and clear plastic with great success. Lot's of big commercial growers use miniature versions ofpolytunnels. When doing seedlings or cuttings remeber to lift the lid at least once a day and breath over your babies.

Can I just add, If you can get a Hi Top propagator, the normal ones are a bit low.
