Hi , I was wondering could anybody tell me what these little fellows are. They are all over the top of my compost in every pot. They look like little green insects only very small its hard to make out with a crap magnifying glass. they could even be larvae heres some pictures.

Also there is no damage on plants they look very healthy, defeated a leaf spot fungas infection with essence, now I see these little feckers, there is none on leafs of plants either, checked that, just in the soil I think, but they could be hard to see on the plants. they only look green up close hardly green fly ?

Also tonight before I found these we fellows I caught a little black fly it didn't look like a fungas nat had a bit of white on it i Think. He got smacked but maybe he's been in there a while there are hundreds of these things on top of the compost. Earlier in veg there was a few fungas gnats flying around must have been in the compost. I don't know much about this end of things.

do they jump about when you move the soil???

No they dont jump, they are very slow moving. They seem to be walking but they have no wings, yet. They are slightly transparent and a light green colour as can be seen in the photo. Very small.

I scraped off about the top 2 inches of compost from the pots with most of these in it. I then put an extra 3 inches of fresh compost on top of the pots . They seem to be all on the top of the compost and nowhere else . Now if anybody can tell me if they are any harm, that would be great. I have never seen them before, they were more than likely in the compost when it was bought.

im not sure, if they arnt eating or skeletonzing the leaves (could be leaf beaetle or leaf weevil) it should be ok. maybe get some spray and just give to soil a few squerts of bug killer.

im not sure the exact name ..thrips maybe!!. most bugs show up when soil is watered tooo often and kept damp. maybe letting the soil dry out and watering less often will help kill some of them off. failing that a change of pots and some fresh soil probly wouldnt hurt..in the meantime play god and get squeezing the life out of the little buggers sorcerer.gif

Maybe I am watering too much their in big 20 litre buckets, I'm still trying to master the right amount of water with these big ones. On a closer look they seem to be feeding on the compost itself I have seen none atempthing to climb the stem yet. they seem to huddle together on top of the compost and feed on the bits of wood and stuff, I know this doesn't mean they are no harm, but just maybe they are not. wink.gif

Cheers I'm glad someone seems to know them, Can they do much damage and how do I get them out of there 13.gif ,just in the first week of a nine week flower.

Can anybody help me with whats these are, and how to control them. There are thousands of them now, and they seem to be feeding on the stem under the soil now.

So I think I need to deal with them but I'm uncertain as to what to use. Any good general purpose soil drench that can get rid of them prefareably organic, only going into the second week of a 9 week flower, so I probably could use a chemical if needed.

Please help. sad.gif
