So I was wondering is anyone growing some normal fruit, veg, herbs, whatever in their boxes?

Seems like a good idea, i've got the light and everything so why not.

First thing that came to mind is chillies... seeing as we eat alot of em in our cooking.

What else, any suggestions? Anything I shoudn't do? Is it a bad idea?

You can, but you attract all kinds of nasties to the tent that you probably don't want. It's the one thing that has been holding me off from doing a lot more indoors. The other factor that someone highlighted to me is the cost of growing veggies under HIDs, so they may not be the most cost effective chillis, but they will be 100% homegrown goodness.

I've been wanting to do cucumbers but until I find the right strain it's really a scrog, or outdoor plant because they either grow really vertical or really horizontal depending if it grows on the vine or on the soil. Chillis are probably a good one to start with I reckon, as well as all herbs...which are a piece of piss to do and do well under CFL.

I've heard of people doing strawbs under bulbs too, but chillies are the ones you always hear about.

I'd like to do bell peppers, or bonsai tomatoes.

Is it possible to grow orchids? I know its a bit out there and none useful but may all the same be interesting.

Canna is normal!

At least mine is; others growers may get hermies and throw-backs - but not me! whistling.gif

Oh boy, the lynch mob is a'coming!

Chillies have the closest requirements to Cannabis - you could grow them at the same time. You won't introduce any bugs if you grow them from seed, and maintain good hygeine. Don't take any plants out of the garden though. smile.gif

Otherwise, in no particular order:

Under HPS:

Bell peppers
Cherry Tomatoes
Physalis (Cape Gooseberry)
Basil
Aubergine
Ornamental Cutting Flowers (Especially miniature rose, lily, carnation)
Citrus trees.
Geranium (Pelargonium)
Marigold

Under M/H

Blueberries (Require acid soil)
Parsley
Cucumber (Might get a bit large)
Lavender
Coriander

Under CFL

Orchids
African Violet
Spinach
Lettuce (Under 21 degrees)

Basically go for expensive flowering or fruiting plants. Root vegetables, brassicas and winter veg are all out. smile.gif

Hi Andy,

How d'ya reckon a few chilli plants in the corner of the grow space would do...not directly under the light but somewhat stealing some light from the space ?

Cheers KDD
