Hey guys, i am running a 600w hps in a diamond reflector, having real heat issues temp taken from a therm hanging out the lite is 30c but in and around the plants is reading 35c, i am using a 5 inch tt intake and 4 inch rvk to extract, i know i know i know that that is obviously a problem, soooo im going to upgrade the extractor to i was thinking 6inch??? but i wanted to see if anyone had a similar setup and what they do to combat the diamonds heat problems??? and will a 6 inch drop that temp enough or should i be looking at an 8 inch??
im also thinking i will have to have a fan of some sort blowing over the bulb somehow to keep the heat down??

basically anyone with a diamond how do you deal with your heat issues??

cheers guys!!

I'm having heat issues with just a 400w diamond... I dread to think what a 600w would be like sad.gif

When you say you've got a 5" "tt" intake, what does the "tt" mean?

You DEFINITELY need more than a 4" extractor for a 600w man. I would go for the 6"... I'm about to upgrade to one myself.

Point your intake at the light and use an oscillating fan gently blowing over the canopy if you're not already.
immoreorlessalive
firstly, swap the two fans round (5" out, 4" in) and open up the passive intakes on the side of the tent (to get rid of light leaks, use cooker hood filter from B&Q). if this doesn't help, try a cooltube, they suck most of the het straight out (although for a 600w you need the 6" extraction... or a 5" to 6" coupler)...
eri
Oh and a 6" outtake is roughy double the extraction rate of a 5"... so it's easily going to bring your temp down a few degrees from a 4" thumbsup.gif

Also, make sure you're extracting to outside.

its bad mate, but i have been reccomended them and heard they are good reflectors so there must be a way around it,
when i say tt thats just how it was described on fleabay, its only cheap but shifts alot of air! it cant handle resitance tho so even a long ducting run it cant handle! at the mo i just have it coming in at the bottom of the tent not directed anywhere, does it make a difference pointing it at the light?? i gues so as its half a cooltube, lol.gif. at the mo i have 2 6inch clip ons in the corners of the tent blowing just under the light but to be honest they dont seem to do alot!!

i have my extraction central at the back of the tent (at the top) would it be worth putting some ducting down to the lamp to suck the hot air away?? but then it would just leave hot airr hanging around at the top of the tent right??
im in a right pickle and cant decide what to do! haha

cheers tho so far this site has helped loads!!

get some circular fans to blow across the base of the lights (if that makes sense)

I use the diamonds and find this the best way to keep em cool

like just some normal desk fans??? what size do you use? do u angle them towards ur extraction? and how close can u get ur diamond to the plants??
do u have any pics of your setup doobz?? it would be a great help, sorry if i seem stoooopid i just think people with experience and gaining there advise is invaluable to me.

i am only just starting at this, and this is my first grow! i know i have alot to learn but this is really bugging me now im thinking after spending all this dosh i might have to change my diamond!! sad.gif cry.gif
which i really dont want to do. unsure.gif

Scooby Snax
there is a calculator on this site to work out what size fan you need

anyone care to put the link up as i'm not sure where it is!

remember, that by adding the carbon filter you will reduce the fans working capacity by a lot, maybe even 50%, so take that into account

Diamonds are a nightmare because of the heat the push down hence i got rid of mine , you need either clip on fans 6inch 7inch etc google them or a large osci fan if you can fit it in your tent.

With mine i used to point one fan clipped on the tent frame to the bulb and one pointing over the plants as for distance id say a good 2foot or more is needed with those.

Hi mate, yea you can use clipon ones, Desktop ones, Free standing ones etc. It doesnt matter what type they are as long as they are blowing the hot air away from your plants tops.

Another thing you mentioned is that you want to get your lights close. This is sometimes not such a good idea as the lights can bleach quite easily.

I think in my current autopot grow there might be a few pics of the fan blowing over the tops or if not maybe in my old grows

In my BB XL I have a 6" rvk extractor the one with 2 settings more powerful and a 5" intake which copes with my 600 watt, so might be worth you upgrading to a 6" rvk, selling the 4" and using the 5" for intake? or do what I do buy another load of gear forget to sell the old stuff and decide to make another room lol.gif

sweet cheers dude, i had a look and defo be doing the same, it seems u got your lights pretty close, ive only really seen negative things about diamond reflectors on here so thought i was onto a looser, good to see someone having sucess with them, couple more questions if thats cool? haha

how close do you get your lights? or do u gauge it someway i,e the old back o the hand tenique? lol.gif
and also where do you have ur fan extracting from? right at the top of the room or around the lights?

cheers dude u been very helpful and raised the spirits.

haha like the thinking, tempting........

yeah im gonna get myself a 6inch to extract and use the 5 as an intake fingers crossed its gonna do the job, ill chuck in my 2 6inch clip-ons onto the ten frame and have them blowing under the light to move some heat, get get my desk fan blowing through the canopy and hopefully....

i dont know whether it would be best to have the extaction pulling air from round the canopy/light area or just from the sort of standard top of the tent??

cheers guys

Heat just rises in general mate so any where high in the tent will be fine, unless you have a cool shade or similiar then you attach the duct to the reflector and pull air through smile.gif

I'm struggling with a diamond at the moment, I find a fan pointing over the canopy works.

I'm not that impressed with the diamond but it's probably better than my old dutch barn cheapo sahde.

No m8 that was with a 400 so god only knows what a 600 would be like, even with this mini grostar i have to keep the 600 around 18inch from the tops as i was getting bleaching still you live and learn smile.gif

Hi.

I'm using a 2 x 600w diamonds in a low roofed space and have had plenty of heat issues over summer. I think it got to just under 33C at worst.

It's not like a tent so was reluctant to post this.

Just for size,
The vent fans are a 6" ruck low power inlet and 6" high power out, through 8" rhino pro cf and mostly, rigid duct.
I used 2 x 12" desk fans for circulation and 2 humidifiers helped massively during the veg period, it's ok now temps have dropped.
Was considering putting an 8" fan on extract and the 6" high power on inlet.

When I was getting inlet temps of 23C to 26C. The humidifiers took 2C out of temps so if your humidity is low you could use this method of cooling, worked for me over summer.

I think the reflectors have a good footprint but I am thinking to use them with a lightmover to get the best out of them, try to eliminate hotspots at the distance from canopy I would like to use them, 12" say, I guess because of the wide lateral spread you would see some real benefit and could eliminate the dark edge behind the bulb.

It is one other negative thing I noticed about diamonds, they have a real dark area behind the fitting, I have been rotating the shades on their lines to avoid the obvious light bias.
