Full Version: Noisy Carbon Filter On Outside Of Box

Due to space restrictions I have my ruck pushing air out of the carbon filter which is outside my box via acoustic ducting.
The fan being on the lowest setting is not too loud but its just the whoosh of air coming out of the filter.

Any ideas?

Would a shop bought silencer help?

Cheaper the better biggrin.gif

I don't see how you could fit a silencer to a system that has the air being blown through a CF. unsure.gif

¿Do you have the fabric sleeve still on it - that might help dampen the sound?

Errr Carbon filter---silencer--- fan--- box?
Is that not how it works?

You are supposed to leave the fabric sleeve on. Surely that is more resistance anyway.
CockRoach
build a box around your filter to muffle the sound but not air tight obviously rolleyes.gif
Mr. Sparkle
Filter in a box lol.gif

it's a valid idea I tell you! ranting.gif (in certain special circumstances whistling.gif)

No but really it does work to reduce the whoosh through the cf, at the cost of some airflow, and it would enable you to use your filter more efficiently by drawing through it rather than blowing through it thumbsup.gif
Scribb|e
You most certainly *are* supposed to leave the fabric sleeve on if you're sucking through the CF like most people have them setup. It stops dust &c. from fouling the carbon granules inside. wink1.gif

I don't see how placing a silencer between the fan and the CF will in any way help with the air movement noise of air coming from the holes in the CF.

@MrSparkle
why cant he do what you have done in your sig but on the outside?
kiki44
Hmmm ok, so i guess silencers are best for reducing whoosh with the ducting.
Boxing the filter is only going to make it worse, think about it wink.gif

I dont get why it is so noisy, surely if i had the filter sucking it would still be noisy on the exhaust ducting end.

i have thought about it wink.gif box the filter drill loads of holes = quieter filter - blowing or sucking ph34r.gif

Im gonna give it a go, will post progress tomorrow wacko.gif

¿Nope - have you read Mr.Sparkle's thread on how he did it?

It's noisy because of all the air turbulence caused by the air being pushed at speed through all the holes in the CF.

If you had the CF sucking the air from the GR like in a more standard configuration, *then* you could put a silencer on the outlet if air movement noise was still a problem. wink1.gif

Ok I get it now Scribble, thanks for that.
Its just obviously im in a different config unless I can squeeze the filter inside.

Im thinking box up the filter air tight and drill the shit out of it so it looks like gruyere cheese. basically another 'layer' to the carbon filter shell.

You think it would be effective to the point that it is actually worth doing.
Or do you have another concept?

what i've done in my sig IS on the outside thumbsup.gif , the only thing in my tent is the duct drawing air out. The fan the bulk of the duct and the cf are all housed on the outside wink1.gif

kiki44 why not have a proper read of my sig thread on boxing the filter, and also Leepy has a great thread about silencing fans. If there's anything about the filter in a box you don't understand from my crap explanation I'd be happy to errrm try to explain lol.gif But it DOES work and it's really useful if you want to extract from more than one area with one CF or if you have limited space inside your grow.

good luck in your quest for silence thumbsup.gif

Oh and scribble is right, by rigging up your fan/filter the way he explains it will work more efficiently and then you could fit a silencer. My crazy MacGyvered solution to the issue of space still keeps the fan/filter set up running the correct way, so technically I could add a silencer as well if I had room. However that wouldn't reduce the whoosh of air going into the cf. The silencer mainly would be to reduce the sound of air leaving the system at the extract point (I think unsure.gif)
CockRoach
Oh doh.gif
kiki44
Yes it would silence the whoosh at the final exit point.

I have already boxed my fan, and have seen leepy's thread on that. Thanks all the same.

I am going to have a think about what to do, I could put the filter inside but means I will deffo not be able to have a HPS to flower.

Wish i had a different cab now sad.gif

Thanks all the same guys, I need to think it out.

Bit of a perfectionist i am. russian.gif
