hi all
just last week i bought a oil filled rad as my temps were droping to 12c i hav had it just below my intake ducting its keeping my temps 21c-19c but i think they will start to get a lot colder is it safe to keep the oil rad inside the tent or could this be a fire hazzard
thanks in advance

oil filled rads are pretty safe. they don't have any exposed elements or anything so should be fine in a tent. as it happens i have the same problem... i've been praying for cooler weather and now it's starting to get too cold... damn you temperate climate...

Hello mate, cant you tie the end oof your ducting so that it's sucking through the rad,and have this on a timer set to come 15 mins before lights out? This is what im doing and temps arnt dropping below 19c lights out.

Or if you have the space...put the rad in a large box with a few holes to let some heat escape, then attach ducting to box (this could be a fire risk though) is there a thermostat on the rad?

yea there is a thermostat on it but surely i had toyed with the idea of putting it in a box and sucking the air through but i have plenty of space in the tent and i think it would be a lot safer in the tent i have a primair for if the temps get to high but i dont think would be needed its only a 700w rad

I have the same issue - gonna move the rad from my box to inside the tent as 3 of my 6 are males so once they go much more room!

It should be fine in the tent, you will waste alot of lecy having it outside and then pumping it into the tent.

Goods to see that you fan controller too, no probs there in case of overheating.

I really liked that intake box, it elimenates the issue of cold air affecting the plants before it warms up, maybe you could make a bigger box for you rad, but the tubes are only 125w so would be much cheaper to run i think, Is your tent in the loft? could you draw from a warmer place, ie a bedroom?

no my tent is in an outhouse inbertween my garage and kitchen the air is not a lot cooler than in my house but there is no heating in there or the garage so its a bit cooler when we have the heating on but still no where near as cool as the air out side plus the oil rad is not on all the time as it is ran off a thermostat and if it was in a box i think the build up of heat would keep it turned off a lot longer than if it was in the tent with my extraction fan turned down

I keep my oil rad in my grow space (it's plastic sheeting) too, just remember to whip out the Led bulb wink.gif

I think it will get a lot colder and damper making your prob worse, my first groom was in a simler situation, i found a eletric fan heater linked to a thermostate used as the intake fan, at night warmed the air enough to remove the humidity and keep the temps up, but it makes noise, so much prefer the intake box with the tubes.

you say you have spent a lot of money getting temps down, if you have an air cooled light reflector simply take the ducting off of your air cooled reflector and extract without sucking through your reflector this will easily give you an extra 4-5oC on top of your normal temp lol.gif lol.gif lol.gif

I used a rad in a growbox and it was fine but what with the air rising the roots are not really kept warm and it cost a lot to run.

I bought a heat mat designed for greenhouses. It is 1m2 and has a thermostat probe to insert into the soil and a controller. I can keep my roots at a consistent 20 degrees for 120watts. I am far less bothered by the ambient air temp during lights off I know it gets low but the plants don't show the usual cold related nute lock out problems. It cost about £100 but there are savings in the electric bill.
