evening all, other day went in to my tent and saw this wee black fucker flying around.. REALLY tiny thing.. killed it, next day same thing.... killed it, today... same fooking thing.!!
just one each time..
well i do have a venus fly trap in there (small garden shop 5 quid thing, but does eat lol.gif) but it doesnt seem to be gettin these things obviously..

do have a usb microscope but damned if i can catch one o these without squishing it flat.

are these problematic/harmful?
using westlands plus soil with 25% perlite added in, and a small cup of bat guano.. a m8 says one could have laid eggs in the dirt and this is where they come from!?!?!? sad.gif any truth in this?

Fungus gnat, mate fly paper is good also you can put an inch of sand at the top of your pots, raw rotting potato on the soil works good at attracting the grubs to it, leave for a night, then pick up a hand ful of dirt with the spud, should help keep the little buggers down a bit!
dohicky
cheers man. try get some flypaper tmoz and see how many i end up with.. go from there

what about damage? do they cause it?
PieInTheSky
They feed on the roots mate, check the knowledge base for more info on them. If they are fungus gnats.
jaysee
Tiny little holes in the leaf, not too bad unless you have a bad infestation, the grubs eat roots and can affect a small plant quire badly, but these are easy to control, with the flypaper etc, the thing to do is break the life cycle.

do these things get in through flys laying eggs in soil coz one got in tent randomly or would be type of thing already in when bought the dirt?
PieInTheSky
My infestation was on a indoor grow, the fly flew into my tent then laid the eggs in soil. I lost 2 clones that just rooted sad.gif

I really hate the things! tiny little dots, that fly right in front of you then vanish! my reactions have got a lot quicker squishing the things though.

I found mixing Gnat Off with the water (using recommended dose on bottle, 1ml for every 10ml of water if I remember right) along with a combination of sticky traps to be really effective.

The Gnat off prevents them laying their eggs in the soil and the sticky traps catch the adults. As I said I found it really effective and well worth the money. You can use a layer of sand on the top of each pot to prevent them laying their eggs aswell but I decided to go with Gnat off.

Good luck mate. As far as damage goes, the flies arent the main problem I dont think. As far as I remember the eggs that hatch in your soil feed off the plants roots (I might be wrong mind) yinyang.gif

Dust some ant powder on the top of your compost and that's the end of those little buggers thumbsup.gif

Permethrin is a reasonably stable molecule and isn't taken up by the plant systemically when used as a powder on the soil surface. Here's some further reading

The Gnat off prevents them laying their eggs in the soil :

This is what my fly trap looks like.
Granted it is on a autoflower speed devil which i couldnt really give a D about. I didn't have any room in the tent and didn't want to risk infesting my good flowering hydro haze with these little feckers! so its on 12/12 at work :S under an envirolite! rofl.gif still flowering though rofl.gif

Tried using that red bottle Scotts stuff. Worked on the hydro in the early days when i saw white fly and havent seen them in the tent since (touch wood). But for the black fly in soil, I'm sure i saw one of them give me the finger!?

That pics just the top side of the trap. The little feckers thought they'd be smart and avoid me by landing on the underside (sticky as well) HAH!
