Got to see the opening keynote speech for Oracle at Oracles Open World trade show here in SF. Oracle bought Sun back in April I believe. Sun is now making servers for Oracle and Larry Ellison made a 10 million dollar bet that no one could make a comparable IBM system go faster. They compared their two fastest systems (names escape me).

The IBM computer was something like 50 racks of servers, System X was about 14 racks. Oracle/Sun System X server has 25% more through put, was 16 times faster and used less electricity, hence more green (larry was pushing the green stuff hard this week ).

Larry announced this after he mentioned that IBM caused a stink over Oracle advertising that cost Larry $10,000.

What I found fascinating was Scott McNeely (of Sun) trashing Apple in his presentation (iPhone being the only phone platform that doesn't use Java), yet Larry was smooth and complimentary about Apples business plan and how they made their products work together so well. I think he wants to buy Apple now.

But it gets better. Today Larry trotted out his new toys and aquisitions. The Govenator of California came out and did a very amusing comedy skit. I could practically see the marinotte strings as he smiled and stumbled his way (he has rotten comedic timing) through his Oracle pump you up schtick.

Then Roger Daltry came out. Him and his band are playing at the private Oracle gig, along with Aerosmith, Three Dog Night and others.
