hi jiff, i'm using west+ mixed with top soil and bio bizz grow and bloom.
i used bio caanna a few years back, it seemed good to me but it was very thick (would have been good if i had a paint shaker lying around)

¿Where'd you get your top soil from - garden centre bagged stuff?

Just on my first go with organics using West + for some plants and B&Q multipurpose for others, fed on Bio Bizz, Grow Bloom, Fish Mix, Maxicrop and Molasses, also Plant Magic granules and Canna Trichoderma at potting up.
Only problem so far is MG Def on my (GHSC) Cheese, which i am trying to resolve with epsom salts, as seen in Bish's posts.

Ive had fungus gnat's leaf roller caterpiller ever since I introduce JAB with John innes and syncroboost, it could have been bad storage but another grower (on here) has had the same problem's as me and he was from a diff location so this year I'd give jab a miss (J Arthur Brown) and the gnat's filled a yellow stick trap in two day's both sides it's been a fun grow

nah i got it from a local enviro friendly wood chip, solid fuel & copost place near me... looks like it needs a seive tho, but i think its their own
i havent got any from garden centres before so i cant compare
is garden center top soil usually shite or infested or sumthing?

Not to my knowledge - I was just wondering if yours was pre-packaged or something you'd come up with yourself.

I have also had a load of ( Flying Bugs) in the last couple of bags i have bought..From the same place i have bought all my JAB and all the others were fine.
Just bought a couple of different ones..Vital Earth MP compost..( A bit woody/barky)
and Westlands JI no2..( Say's potting up compost on the bag but on the back says enough food for 6/7 weeks)..Seemed really wet in the bag.. Like river bank mud..
Seeds have germed ok so ill give it a bash.

I bought my first bag of J Arthur Bowers the other week, and got infested with fungus gnats too. It was like concrete too after a watering, and 3 of my plants suffered Sudden Death Syndrome in it - first time that's happened to me in 5 years! I won't be buying it again, I'm back on the West+

Good grief, the man wants ORGANIC compost peeps, not a load of nute infested multi-purpose!

I dont think there's more than one ORGANIC thing mentioned in this thread asking abotu ORGANIC compost in the ORGANIC forum

Fertiel Fibres.
Nature's Own Multi Purpose Potting Compost.
Those two are ones I know. Both work well, I believe. I've made good use of the Nature's Own offering, it is a superb compost for cannabis but does need careful watering, or a slight addition of Coco fibre to assist drainage, perhaps.

I'm trying out a bag of plagron lightmix at the moment and it seems pretty good. It claims to be organic, but as it contains peat I guess that is questionable.
Also picked up a few bags of New Horizon organic peat free MP. Wilkos sell it in 10L bags and is "...based on composted timber and recycled composted green matter". It says it has bonemeal, hoof and horn, vinasse and rock phosphate added that's good for 4-6 weeks feed. Lots of wood in it, but fine and crumbly when sieved out.
I really want to make my own mix though and have been collecting a few things for that.

Hi Jiffa
I have used Fertile fibre and also the nutes that they recommend to go with it(Nugro),very good for vegging imo.I bought the coir block that makes up approx 60ltrs of compo when soaked in water.
This time around im using Westlands Organic Vegetable compo and it seems ok,the roots are showing at the bottom of the 3.5ltr pots after only being potted up at the start of the week and they are a nice bright white colour. Also the compo seems to hold water ok without setting really hard and although it needs sieving before use its a lovely dark sweet smelling compo imo.
I have no idea how they are going to be in flower but on the pack it says extra nutes for fine veggies sooo im hoping its going to be good, and last at least a couple of weeks into flower with no extra nutes needed.
Hope this helps
peace HH

ive used asda's multipurpose not great IMO al;so used west plus grow bag and also homebase multi purpose with decent results

Used a mix of B&Q John Inns No. 2 and Westlands West+ (peatfree) Multipurpose.
The B&Q seems like really nice quality compost but I wasn't sure about the westlands, it's some strange stuff in that bag and I'm not sure if I'd prefer to use something else all together next time. I can't say I noticed anything wrong with the Westlads but it was just strange looking and smelling stuff in the bag.
I think next time I'll go for a mix of B&Q John Inns No. 2 and Canna Coco, then enrich with Worm Castings and Rock Dust.

The Natural Gardener's mix is purely 50/50 EWC/Coir, which is definitely too strong on the EWC for cannabis / most plants.
The coir is great stuff and their ewc production should mean its full of goodness - but my ewc was rather dry as others have reported.
I mixed mine with 30% loam from BnQ and 20% Allmix/New Horizon plus rockdust but the loam made it too heavy.
I wouldn't use the loam again as it was clayey and sandy (I'm guessing it may of been from turf farming) and encouraged caking.
If cut with more coir and with added minerals their mix would be good - but you could easily knock together something similar cheaper with coir (blocks maybe) + ewc + minerals / kelp / molasses / comfery pellets / other goodies for better drainage / microbe friendly mix yourself.
As others will also attest you should be aiming for 50-70% coir (if not using any peat) and upto 30% ewc/loam/ mirobe fodder

Ok jiffa mate
Ive had ok results from the New Horizon mp but found it rather heavy and not very good for water retention, actually thinking back it was a dirty medium if you get me, left my hands stinking!
Bio BIzz was good but too expensive imo and also a bit smelly!! It did give me good yields mind and I would use it again.
I have used a couple of other non-organic but Ill keep them to another thread ;-)
(ps Id use the NH with a mix of Westlands but you didn't hear that, right!)

Bio Biz All Mix never let me down, now to save some money im trying out Westlands Organic Vegetable Compost and adding worm poo 15%, perlite 30% and Bio Bizz Pre Mix at around 3 - 5 %. So far so good

Im using Bio Bizz nutes aswell.
