Full Version: Can I Pot Up Just Before Going 12/12?.. Drawbacks?

Hi folks,
I got a buncha plants vegging in 4 L pots (Homebase MP comp. with rockdust and PM 'Granules'), about half of which I want to put onto 12/12 within the next day or so (wanna small harvest in and dry/ready for some Xmas smokes!)...

Now they all shoulda rooted these pots out and be well on their way to rooting out in the 6.5L pots I have waiting, but the drop in temperatures (and my slowness to heat the space) has held things back so that they are not even quite done with the 4L pots, and now there is no way I will be able to have them fill out the 6.5's with roots before going 12/12, and still crop/dry in time for Xmas.

My question(s) is(are), should I flower out in the 4L pots, or pot up into the 6.5L (with Granules and Rockdust etc.) before going 12/12?

If I do put them into bigger pots and start flowering out before they fill them, what are the problems/drawbacks I can expect if any (and I'm sure there are)..?

Thanks guys an' gals!

Be well.

Fill the pots with roots before going 12/12 mate wink.gif stay in yer current pots and go 12/12, or if you pot up give em at least a week to root out the 6.5l pots before flicking the switch

What strain fella & what finishing time (if you know)

Might be benifical to pot up for 2 more weeks in the 6.5,s

Be a tight squeeze tho..

Cheers pal - always have rooted out well before flowering, just can't recall what the issues actually are for flowering out plants that haven't rooted out their compost yet?

Thanks. ',;~}~

Think the only issue is less developed rootball which translates into less potential yield.

Got three strains there, some BF NightShade, GHS Trainwreck, and a couple ICE plants I was given. The ICE claim 8 weeks flower, and the NS and TW claim similar, but I have grown out my NS and TW several times now and the NS take 10 weeks, the TW (cuts from 3 different seed plants) take 9, 10, and 11 weeks to finish, so I am not expecting the ICE to finish in 8 weeks, either!

If I pot up today even and root out the 6.5L pots, there's no way we will have any smoke ripe, harvested and dried in plenty of time...

Cheers!

Does the rootball development slow down soon as 12/12 is started then?

I'd got it somewhere in my head that the reason for not potting up just before flower was summink to do with the nutrient profile - too much N in the fresh compost or summink causing less than desirable growth traits during flower?

(Hate the way bits of info float around the head, wondering where they came from and if they hold any water lol.gif!)_

MS?MJ!
IME the roots keep growing for the first 2 weeks of flower, while the plant is stretching - I usually do the final pot up as I put them into flower and there are always roots showing at the bottom of the pots within a week or so. I do pot up 4 times though, so the roots aren't being expected to fill too much space before the plant begins to concentrate fully on flowering.

Cheers mate.

Kinda solved the problem for now - left me doyty goyls in veg so I can pot them up in their own time, but bunged my knackered, ancient clones in the Amazon 32 into flower instead (see me abandoned diary!) - they have been sat in an Aero prop. doing nothing, then in the Amazon doing the same, for months and months, and rather than throing them out, I just mostly ignored them and concentrated on the girls in dirt, until such a time I was ready for taking more cuttings. Well they started rooting well as the temps dropped and my pythium controll measures kicked in - should get 2 or 3 Oz from them in time for Xmas now, then have 8 girls in dirt all fat, rooted out in 11L pots and ready for flower in the next few weeks, decent crop for the new year!

I potted up last time one of my babies (Into 20ltr bucket) the day I went into flower I didn't the others 11ltr the one I potted up did considerably better and they were all from clones and very even when I potted up. The 11ltr pots all yielded with 5grms of each other.

I'd pot up veg for another week then flower.
growndome
havent been doin this that long but the last couple of grows I have only left em in the final pots for 5 days to a week before 12/12 and all have had decent enough roots at the end and been happy with results.

good luck spliff.gif

Say you have a reason that means you would prefer to pot up just as you go into 12/12. I have found that if you get the soil ready in the pots, give the soil a water with some rooting gel mixed with the water, leave the pots standing for upto a week with out the plants in them and you should be ok. as this gives time for the micro herd to build up and after a week of doing that your plants should do Fine. IMO you dont have to have the plants in the soil for a week vegging. Just have the soil prepared in the pots for a week before hand.
