I think I have swine flu... bad times!

I also think I've got over the worst of it and have been looking into whether cannabis can aid my recovery.
<Snip! Link removed....>
Also read a few forums but have to take them with a bucketful of salt.

It should aid psychologically and with most other symptoms (help sleep, reduce muscle ache, increased appetite) however I was going to smoke it as its midnight and I'm not doing any baking now wink.gif. Smoking will however be harmful to the lungs and throat prolonging those specific symptoms.

I have taken 6 paracetamol so far today (2 every 4 hrs) which should be helping in reducing my temperature.

I am going to have a spliff now and I'll post back with which symptoms have been helped and which ones havn't and whether I will be continuing this experiment or not.

Whatever my results show don't think it then will or wont work for you. I'm sure there is better research on this subject out there which should be taken into account - I just feel too ill to wade through it all (oh the irony of it all - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gwDRBm-qbQI)

See you on the other side...

Plenty of fluids and a good night's sleep if poss spliff.gif Sorry you're feeling ill mate - all the best

I posted a link to a paper around the time of the Mexico breakout that said cannabis had a negative effect in influenza infections... it's fallen off the data precipice now it seems.

It's generally ok for regular flu (of which swine flu is a generally mild variant). Obviously smoking isn't generally good for flu, but weed may aid a good sleep and any muscular pain.

What makes you think it's swine flu as opposed to regular flu if you don't mind me asking ?

My friend had swine flu a few weeks back and it knocked her for a few days but she's been back in work a coupla weeks (no antiivirals required rofl.gif - if they helped in any serious way she would presumably been offered them as a
district nurse)

Hope you enjoyed the puff mate yes.gif
Firefly
Well its done and I have to say that my temperature seems to be up slightly but its been doing that all today.

It hasn't changed my breathing at all and wasn't harsh on the throat except when i had to relight it once. The way I Smoked as to reduce the harshness was to smoke a single skin spliff through a bong with the hit hole open throughout.

Hasn't helped my muscle soreness either and I now think I'm gonna have to lie in bed with my laptop. But I do feel happy about all of it so in a way that's good. What would be the best is the opposite: fix all my symptoms and not get me high.

Better luck next experiment...

Firefly

Ps. Cheers guys for the heads up on the previous posts; I went thought 5 pages of topics should have done more, I forgot how longs its been since it started!
Firefly
Now though I have to make a swifty addition to my previous post a few minutes ago...

The initial high didn't really help but I think now the "stonedness" is progressing [1] I feel relaxed and aspects of the muscle soreness have gone away; the general ache has gone but the aches I had before getting ill (fitness related) are still there.

[1]I think this shows the effect of certain cannabinoids on the body and in the paper that I posted in the start it did say "...peer reviewed publications have shown that phytocannabinoids can prevent this cell death by mimicking the endocannabinoids that nature has selected to prevent excessive inflammatory immune responses"

Sorry to have to use Harvard referencing. Anyway i now feel alright actually and still gonna go lie on my bed ready for an episode of family guy before sleep sleep.gif

sleep.gif night guys...

experiments have shown that THC affects how the lungs respond to the flu virus:

QUOTE
Modulation of Airway Responses to Influenza A/PR/8/34 by {Delta}9-Tetrahydrocannabinol in C57BL/6 Mice

{Delta}9-Tetrahydrocannabinol ({Delta}9-THC) has been widely established as a modulator of host immune responses. Accordingly, the objective of the present study was to examine the effects of {Delta}9-THC on the immune response within the lungs and associated changes in the morphology of the bronchiolar epithelium after one challenge with a nonlethal dose of the influenza virus A/PR/8 (PR8). C57BL/6 mice were treated by oral gavage with {Delta}9-THC and/or vehicle (corn oil) for 5 consecutive days. On day 3, mice were instilled intranasally with 50 plaque-forming units of PR8 and/or vehicle (saline) 4 h before {Delta}9-THC exposure. Mice were subsequently killed 7 and 10 days postinfection (dpi). Viral hemagglutinin 1 (H1) mRNA levels in the lungs were increased in a dose-dependent manner with {Delta}9-THC treatment. Enumeration of inflammatory cell types in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid showed an attenuation of macrophages and CD4+ and CD8+ T cells in {Delta}9-THC-treated mice compared with controls. Likewise, the magnitude of inflammation and virus-induced mucous cell metaplasia, as assessed by histopathology, was reduced in {Delta}9-THC-treated mice by 10 dpi. Collectively, these results suggest that {Delta}9-THC treatment increased viral load, as assessed by H1 mRNA levels, through a decrease in recruitment of macrophages and lymphocytes, particularly CD4+ and CD8+ T cells, to the lung.

Sorry for my ignorance but does that prove that THC does not help?

Satta, It says that in mice at least, those mice that were fed THC for 10 days had higher levels of flu in their lungs than those that weren't and that the quantity of flu virus was linked to the thc dosage. So in mice at least THC lowers the lungs ability to fight off the infection

I had flu in January, knocked me for seven for two weeks, then took a week more to feel normal. I couldn't smoke cannabis because of a massive retch inducing cough, which made me chuck a couple of times ( excl.gif yum!) I reverted to the old vapouriser, I have a Vapir stashed away for these moments. This seemed to be ok but still made me cough and the warm air made my throat dry and uncomfortable. In desperation to feel better, I warmed some crumbled Trainwreck in a little butter, swished it into a yoghurt and knocked it back. I can't say whether or not it helped with the flu, but I slept for about a day which stopped me complaining, so the mrs got over her earache!
Hope you feel better soon,

I generally find that smoking canna helps with flu symptoms, but only if done in tiny amounts. Like a couple tiny puffs once or twice a day. Any more than that and my lungs feel uncomfortable and I get more disoriented than I like.

Nice find btw Billious! thumbsup.gif

My link that got removed was on the same subject - using a lozenge instead of smoking.

All I have now is a bad cough and I'm about to go and teach martial arts so I'm up and about.

Cheers guys for all the input. I think its a personal thing - helped me I think.

Signing off...

Thanks for setting me straight Billous. I find it really hard to understand some scientific analysis of things! Too many long words :s

Cannabis Science Updates Progress For Its Phytocannabinoid

Pharmaceutical Products To Help Reduce ARDS-Associated Deaths
From Both The Avian And Swine Influenza Infections

Cannabis Science Inc CBIS | 9/21/2009 10:08:00

AMCOLORADO SPRINGS, Colo., Sep 21, 2009 (BUSINESS WIRE) --

Cannabis
Science Inc. (NASD OTCBB: CBIS) an emerging pharmaceutical cannabis company, is pleased to report progress for its phytocannabinoid pharmaceutical products to help reduce ARDS-associated deaths from both the Avian and Swine Influenza infections.

Cannabis Science, Inc. President & CEO Dr. Robert Melamede stated, "After discussing our pharmaceutical products and initiatives with the FDA, Cannabis Science has taken certain steps to meet this potentially urgent situation. Although there is much yet to be done, I am very optimistic that we have an opportunity to have our products available to help meet this challenge."

Dr. Melamede concludes with an outline of Cannabis Science corporate guidance on its FDA procedures: "There are a number of critical capabilities that must be assembled into a cohesive whole. The guiding principle of both our scientific and business operations is that, by using appropriate independent contractors that are experts in their fields, the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

Most importantly, we want everyone to understand the efficient and effective corporate structure that we are creating with holistic principles in mind. We are assembling teams in all the necessary arenas required for our growth and success. We have an agreement with a successful organic producer to provide us with the raw material. We are establishing a genetic testing facility to insure the production of consistent botanical products, as required for FDA approval, using state of the art procedures. We have identified a CGMP compliant processor who will make an FDA approvable extract for further processing by another qualified and experienced manufacturer, who will produce the final commercial product after FDA approval.

Our compliance team of professionals will oversee all of these activities with their many years of FDA experience. We are extremely pleased with the history and quality of expertise of the team that we are bringing together to face the immediate urgent challenges. We again thank our investors for their confidence in providing us with the necessary resources for this revolutionary undertaking. We have a number of exciting new initiatives we plan to announce shortly and we feel honored to be commissioned to make this happen."

H1N1 Swine Flu:

According to the CDC (http://www.cdc.gov/flu/avian/) the Avian flu (H5N1) has a 63% mortality rate. Unfortunately, the Swine flu, while thus far causing death at a much lower rate than the Avian flu, appears to also result in death via a similar mechanism. The common cause of death with these strains is organ failure, especially as seen in the lungs with the development of Adult Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS). ARDS is caused by an excess immune-generated inflammatory response that leads to apoptosis (cell death) and subsequently to organ failure. The Company's approach will mimic how the human body uses endocannabinoids (cannabinoids that occur naturally in the body) to regulate immune activity and cell survival, by regulating inflammatory biochemistry. Excessive inflammatory responses are associated with numerous disease states including autoimmune diseases, neurological imbalances, and cardiovascular disease. Phytocannabinoids provide a natural means to supplement illness-specific endocannabinoid deficiencies.

Cannabis Science H1N1 Swine Flu Formulation:

We now know that the endocannabinoid system plays a critical role in maintaining human health. The human body produces Endocannabinoids on demand when they are needed. They help restore homeostasis (biochemical balance). The Cannabis plant produces Phytocannabinoids. When the human body has endocannabinoid deficiencies, it cannot effectively restore the healthy biochemical state needed to counter a particular illness. Phytocannabinoids from the Cannabis plant can replace the deficient endocannabinoid activity in the human body to restore a health-promoting level of cannabinoid activity. Cannabis Science will test its pharmaceutical products with FDA guidance and oversight to determine if it will reduce ARDS-associated deaths from both the Avian and Swine influenza infections.

Personally can't smoke when I'm sick with flu like symptoms.

For a start I already feel fucked and in a haze. I smoke and it's like I'm blind and drunk trying to swim through a sea of hair gel. Not pleasant. Also it usually blocks my nose up further than it needs to be and gives me more pressure in my head.
