i have just started to learn about the EC levels when feeding plants, as i have just been guessing at how much to feed my plant at the mo, and it does not look like i have been doing a good estimate as my plant has got nute burn sad.gif. So i am definately getting an EC pen next week prob from greens, any advice as of which pens would suit me best for the job from greens? i am growing in soil and i will be testing the pH and EC of the water before watering/feeding, and also what are the optimal EC levels as i have not got a clue on even the scale sad.gif thanks guys

You won't need a pen when growing in soil.

How long in are your plants? they don't need any nutes until they are in flowering
tingting44
so how will i measure the correct ammount of nutes i am giving my plant then without a pen? in soil or not i am sure i would still need to measrue the ammount, and my plant is in its 4th week of flower
tingting44
thanks, also i am going to be getting some Biobizz grow & bloom, just wondering if you would use the grow and bloom every time u feed em or everytime u water? thannks

I agree - for growing in soil/compost, the pens are unnecessary - and you certainly don't need to be buggering about monitoring or messing with the pH - compost is self-buffering. thumbsup.gif

If you think that you have overfed your plants just reduce the amount of feed until they look happy again - and remember, less is nearly always more in this game. wink1.gif

thanks scribble, but my tap water comes out at nearly 8pH! so i dont think that will be good for the plant will it? so i have been ph my water to 5.5 - 6.0pH or would it be ok scribble to just give the plant water at 8.0pH?

test your water ph after you ither bubbeled it for an hour with air pump or let stand for 12/24 hours ph will drop as nasty added stuff evaporates

some ppl constantly feed evry water others feed evry other watering i suspect this is down to how strain reacts to ferts start low dose evry other water if plant asks for more (yellowing from bottom up) give it more (feed evry water or up doseage evry other water)

find a rutene that suits you and your plants best

best of luck

The optimum ph of the compost for maintaining health and growth is 6.5 to 6.8. It is much harder for the compost to buffer up than to buffer down.

I don't know how many time I have to say this, if you do ph down not below 6.5! You will mess up the micro flora and if not very careful ruin the compost.

Decent compost will buffer pH 8 down no problem - 1/2 the UK has probably got tap water at pH 8+ (mine is), and I've never adjusted pH in soil. What have you been using as pH down? - if it's phosphoric acid that's probably what is burning your plants. Stop using immediatelly!.

The ph will rise after it's stood for a while dude not fall.

WOH! so i been doing damage ph ing my water down so low! i use the hydroponic ph down from local grow shop. it contains 81% phosphoric acid

so i might just stop using the ph down then? grhhhhh
EDIT: lovely nute guide from ot1! thanks i will be following it to a tee after this grow
tingting44
i am going to be getting some grow and bloom tom from my local shop, do u think i will need to flush out with just plain water that has settled for about 3 days? or go straight in with ot1's grow and bloom?

A water of pH 8 sounds bad, but it hardly has anything in it - it has a very low buffering capacity so it will do your plants no harm at all watering them with it. wink1.gif

And don't forget that flowering plants also need some N, so don't stop feeding them Grow altogether. thumbsup.gif

yeah going to the local shop as soon as it opens at 9am today lol.gif lol.gif to get my biobizz grow and bloom just wondering to switch straight to grow and bloom today from my normal tomato feed and will i need to flush it? its in the 4th week of flower and the white pistons are turning brown, any any advice would be great

EDIT: also starting to use normal settled water today without no pH ing down to 5.5 like usual
