Not sure if this is the right place, but i guess most phones are computers these days.

ok, so i got a free upgrade from orange, a sony ericsson w705. its 3g and wi-fi. i never really used mobile internet before except for filling out test sheets at work. the phone connects, no problems to both 3g and wi-fi, but the only browser on it is orange world. connected in 3g, orange world works fine, but after connecting in wi-fi mode, to an open network, when i click orange world, it says, that orange world only works in 3g mode, not wi-fi. so if i want to use the internet, i gotta pay 3g rates.

whats the point of having wi-fi?

is threre a stand alone browser i can put on the phone to use with wi-fi, maybe opera or firefox (even internet explorer, if no choice)?

which browser should work, since it states that the phone has a proprietary OS, rather than windows or symbian?

can i download a browser on the pc, then load it onto the phone?

just thought i'd try here, before phoning orange, and getting their (probably biased) advice.

thanks

Orange lock the crap out of the phones - like with a blackberry from them the bbmaps is hidden - its still there but they screw with all sorts of config stuff to 'encourage' you to buy stuff from them instead.

Try downloading opera mini or some other browser via 3g and then try to connect with wifi and opera and use the web without orange world as its pants anyway.

U can always try upgrading the phones os which will wipe all of orange config stuff (it will also wipe all contacts etc so be careful and if you do the wrong thing u can brick the phone).

cheers, i looked at opera mobile, all the downloads are for versions of windows mobile, i guess the sony ericsson OS is a version of windows with a custom front end, dont know which version though. i'll dig about on the opera site, see what i find.

I think that phone runs a symbian os which should be able to run pretty much any java midp app so just look for that.

Have a look on the sony ericsson site, you might be able to download a browser direct from there, they'll probably have info on using wi-fi also thumbsup.gif

yeah, cheers. i only got it yesterday, i have yet to do much digging about on it, i thought there might be some obvious thing i was overlooking, its looking likely that opera mini will do it. i'll try downloading it, see how it gets on.

well, that was painless! cool.gif

i went on an opera mini forum, found that someone else asked the same question, downloaded opera mini4.2, voila! took about a minute. cheers for the suggestions.
