I've been reading throu the grow diaries and from my own experince and what over's have said. I have come to the conclusion that JAB with addded syncroboost this year has been well a bag of pooh.gif most of the people that have used it seem to have had an outbreak of fungus gnat's and then later on in the grow rust or lsf has ne one else had problem's with this I know Logik has

Do you mean this one Compost Survey 2009?

I did ask 'favorite compost' - meaning would you use it again....hopefully peeps have answered that way.

e2a - that reminds me, must be time for a gentle bump.....

fe2a - I reckon the problems with gnats and the like are often down to the suppliers rather than the compost per se. E.g. Is it old stock or fresh stock and has it been stored undercover or out in the rain. Pick your garden centre with care.

Indeed, i have had really bad luck with compost this year. The jab+ji mp smelt and looked good but had a plague of fungas knats along for the ride and try as i might i couldnt stop it from compacting to the point where i couldnt get it to absorb water. I changed back to wests mp but this seems to have changed again and is now full of uncomposted wood and not much else( great drainage but poor results). Does anyone have a recomendation based on compost bought recently other than the two mentioned or a way to fluff up the jab a bit, ta.

@ erbivore: I've not found JAB+JI to clag at all, really. You do riddle it thoroughly before use, yes? I know it arrives in lumps sometimes, but these come good in the riddling. TBH, I've not had a bad bag of JAB+JI yet; not saying I won't at some point, but so far all have been very good and just needed a good old riddling to get rid of any unwnated lumps. Which tend to be very few in number.
Coco fibre could be added but is inert, so that's a load of nutrients your plants will need to look to you for. Personally, I would not advise adding anything, composts come carefully balanced and ready for use. Adding stuff will only disrupt the balance and alter the nutrient profile. Not really a useful way forward IMO. Fine if you're making your own, but then you would not be starting with a shop purchased compost.

I've got to agree with ya Arnie. I was recommend that I get JAB+JI. its really great compost compared to what i've seen. It does have lumps but thats not a problem, If ya don't have a riddle use ya god given hands stoned.gif
1 problem I did get was an MG def, I had the same problem in another soil which was plagron bat mix. I think some strains just have different needs, my Dinafem didnt need MG, but my blue cheese did at the same time period from start.

JAB+JI highly recommended. fine compost

Do ya know when which.co.uk gardening posts its yearly review on composts?

I allways rough sieve and break up everything this was definately not lumpy, very fine infact. I shall try again next year as like i said it looks and smells great but after a couple of waterings it went like concrete and was almost waterproof, i still have a cut in a small pot in the garden and getting it to take in water is a nightmare.
