depends how it's wound, but most wont like it. they aren't designed to be voltage controlled. so don't risk it

So how do i know what fan to get, i want to be able to fit a variac to it ?

get a single speed fan. rvk, ruck, vkm, s&p vent series, inline duct fans will all be compatible
