Hello all, decided on a whim to grow this spring. Had some seeds collected from gear I've smoked so decided to just pop in some soil and see what happens - no real planning or thought went into this. Of the ten or so seeds I grew from only three survived and one was male so got the chop about a month ago (typically he was the healthiest, largest and sweetest smelling of the three).

This is what remains:

This lady was a bit of a surprise, she languished behind a curtain until my girlfriend found her. She was kind of small, still is - at around 1m high. What's odd is I smoke pretty much exclusively Thai and Jamaican and yet she's clearly an Indica of some description. I'm not complaining, despite her small size she's flowering nicely and has some sweet hashy smelling bud.

Now she's clearly a Sativa, my guess is Thai which I've subsequently read is about the worst plant you can grow outdoors in the UK due to horrendously late flowering. She's pretty big, standing well over 2m but despite preflowers showing well over a month ago she's done nothing since - no buds, hairy bits, no smell even. My guess is I'm going to have to wait till November and by that stage it'll be goodnight Vienna.

Oh well, you live and learn. Next year I'm getting proper seeds, going to dig big holes and fill with perfect soil mix, get pH meters and lots of good ferts and sort out bug infestations as soon as they happen. This is my first real grow - the one thing I hadn't banked on was how satisfying it all is - and how pretty pot plants are. Thanks to everyone in this folder - some of the grows on here are genuinely inspiring.

Sounds like you got the bug lol.gif

Plants look fine mate, considering the abuse they have grown up in.....no expensive ferts or posh compost TUT TUT......lol.gif lol.gif

I read this morning that we will have decent weather for the next few weeks so keep your fingers crossed and start looking for some strains to grow next year that will be better for outdoors.

Good luck,

Good work smile.gif and yes Sativa is a rather bad strain to use due to longer flowering times, glad to hear your getting some propper seeds / ferts next year, that will seriously improve your chances. If possible next year buy some feminized seeds rather than just taking your chances, and again if possible plant them really early (indoors) and get them well established (at least 1ft tall) or even more if you can, and then plant them outdoors.

Thanks all.

Re: fem seeds - I was under the impression that they can compromise the plant itself, less disease resistant and so forth. Is that not accurate?

Also, my lower fan leaves are yellowing in places, what does that generally indicate? I am using seaweed extract on them as we had some lying around, but nothing else.

I'm thinking of going with Durban Poison next year as it seems to be an early flowering Sativa, my problem is I just don't like the heavy stone you get from Indica or Indica dominant strains so Early Girl and the like are out.

Don't worry about yellowing fan leaves, just pick them off to keep the plant clean and healthy.

DP is a good strain but can grow a bit high, as has been said get sorted out and start the plants indoors and aim to plant out foot tall plants in about late May June time.

My only experience of fem seeds was a disaster so I won't comment

A newbie comments:

Yellowing is normal, fan leaves first, dont pull them off until theyre proper dead, b4 then the sugars from the dying leaf retreat back into the plant which is good.
Near harvest this'll get overall and rapid.
Early yellowing (from the bottom up) is sign of hunger (feed required) but NOT TOO MUCH!

I have murdered plants 2 yrs in a row through overfeeding. Isnt there some sort of prize for this kind of stupidity?

Thanks cumulus and JOM, I'll not fret too much about them.

Disturbing emoticon there cumulus. Just... wrong somehow.

That's me shooting on a DSLR through a 30x loupe, bit blurry but it's lovely seeing the individual trichomes in some detail.

My little random girl's top cola, as I say this was a few weeks ago - she's fattened up a bit since then and I'm hoping to harvest on Sunday. My presumed Thai has still done absolutely nothing so, reluctantly, she's coming down soon too.
