Hi all,
Please forgive any ignorance or plain stupidness in advance, Im not exaclty clued up on IT.
Ive got a new Laptop (Sony Vaio) and I would like to start using it (had it for 5 months, only unpacked yesterday).
My question is this - Can I simply unplug the modem from the back of my current comp (that Im using now) and plug it into my new one and carry on as normal or is there more to it than that ? (I would imagine so, nothing is that easy).
Im clueless regarding Comps/Pcs, any help is appreciated.

If it's a usb modem, you'll probably need the drivers for it, but if it's a router you can just plug a cable in via the LAN connection. What make is the modem? If you don't have the drivers disk for it, download the latest ones from the manufacturers website on your old pc, then stick them on a pen drive or burn to cd to transfer them to your laptop.

The Modem would appear to BT, I think its a USB modem (plugs into back of hard drive?).
Thanks for your help, appreciated.

If BT are your service provider (ISP) then you should have got an install/set up cd with it. Just use that if you can find it, should work fine.

If it's a BT HomeHub, then you will be able to simply connect your Vaio's network card via an Ethernet cable to one of the Ethernet sockets in the HomeHub - it should pick up a local IP address automatically via DHCP.

Either that, or you could use the wireless connection that presumably the Vaio has built-in to it.

e2a: Ethernet connections are superior to USB for networking purposes.
