Full Version: What To Do About The Wind?

hi i have my plants outside and they are doing fine. they have recently started to flower (sometime within the last 2 weeks). they are all blue cheese but they are different sizes as they all in different sized pots - we were rather disorganised this year and ended up using what we could get hold of. but they are ok and we are now using biobizz bloom which they have responded well to.
however i am rather worried about the wind. it is getting strong and although the plants are not in the middle of an open field they are still somewhat exposed. we were hoping to make a diy greenhouse but we have no way of transporting the plastic to the growsite so we are going to have to finish growing as we are. do you guys find that these plants can stand quite strong winds that we normally get here in the u.k? or should i seriously try to sort out some kind of protection for them?
many thanks x

Unless its gale force/storm winds I'd say they should be fine, strong winds normally make the plants stronger with harder thicker branches... all good as the stronger the branches the more bud weight they can hold.

I would just say keep them well fed and watered so they can fight off any wind burn and you should be ok.

hope this helps a bit,

Covering them would be too obvious, you should support them with bamboo canes to prevent them being blown over spliff.gif
shafty420
bamboo canes or garden wire and a stake and stake them into ground

Yup bamboo or somekind of post with and strap pref a rubber tree tie...

The bigger they are the harder they fall...

i thought they would be ok, just looking for other opinions of those who have experience.
good idea about the bamboo canes. will try those. when the plants were alot smaller (about 6 weeks old) we used some large robust sticks to tie to the stems for support and anchored them in the pots witht he plants. as they have grown bigger they have filled out alot and hidden the sticks and are not using them now so when we repotted we just chucked the sticks away.

the plants at the moment, although in their own pots, are placed on the ground on an area of mud so we would be able to anchor bamboo canes and such into the mud beside them and that would make them stable so next time we go up there will give that a try.

how do i go about using the windeeze? perhapse aply with the regular feeding? lol.gif
thanks for the quick replys all.

Sorry, a bit unsure. you say they are in pots?
go with the cane for supprt and if they are in pots, dig holes and bury the pots also.
if you bank up earth around the pot and secure to a cane, they should take everything!
Good luck.

My potted plants have a bad habit of falling over in the wind, so I buried the pots. Maybe try putting more mud/earth around the bases of your babies and then use string/twine and canes to support them. As the other posters have said, strong winds can strengthen plants, but always make sure you have last-resort support just in case, especially in these last few critical flowering weeks!
