How do I know when I need to pot my plants on?

I always get it wrong and leave it until they look like they need it and I'm sure this doesn't do them much good but I don't want to do it too early either!

I had to re-pot yesterday on the basis of that info. Another couple of days and I think there mighthave been some damage.
