Nope - that's definitely what's causing it - that's why is a *must* that all the hydro pebbles be agitated and washed thoroughly before use. In the bath using a power-shower and a colander works well.

Depending on how far along the grow is, you might be best advised to start over and wash the pebbles before using them again, otherwise your grow is going to be all over the place while it's like that.

not trying to jack your thread
basically yesterday i followed owderbs instructions on how to pre pair clay pebbles. today i put the pebbles in to pots and turned on the system, after the drain the water came back slightly mucky" there were small amounts of clay dust deposits bottom of the res and also bottom of the pots,
i drained the res and filled it bk up with fresh water ran the system again and this time it came back clear.
im going to do it maybe one more time with ph adjuted water and let them be flooded for couple of hours

easiest way i find to clean them is to drill a load of holes in the bottom of a bucket, fill it with pebbles and run a hose over it while stiring them around

I never pre soak clay balls. I just wash the dust off.using the mesh cover off an old 16inch fan and my powershower.
My ph levels are always a little unstable for the first week or so. And then everything just settles down. I use a wilma system (11ltr pots) and rockwool cubes. And it,s really only the clay balls directly below the rockwool thats the problem and say the bottom 3rd of the pot. So a few feed with ph adjusted water will sort thing for ya
Ive also used the same clay balls for 4 grows in a row with no ill effects. I just added a few 1s new every grow to make up for those that always seem to get stepped on or crumbled away too dust.
