According to the map in "A guide to growing marijuana in the British Isles and other cool climates" (Hassle free press) the average first frosts in the west country are Exeter November 5,Plymouth December 3 wink.gif My first average frost is Nov 20 which sounds about right actually or maybe a little later ph34r.gif

Hey shafty, I'm in the east midlands too, just had a look at your garden and by god is it making me regret not getting of my arse and finding a plot... they're looking nice, especially considering the shitty weather...

good job thumbsup.gif

Doctor John
In my experience, its the roots thats the problem.... plants should withstand mild frosts... with little bother, as they would in a more "natural" location, such as Afghanistan.... late morning frosts (6am on) should do little damage, so long as plants warm up again gradually - ice crystals forming in cells do the damage, especially if exposed to quick harsh temp changes, which ruptures the cell walls.

Insulate, if possible, around base with straw, or similar, to protect the roots, should a hard sustained frost be likely..... its the vilnerable bit, but depends upon strain being grown....

Horticultural fleece will protect the visible parts of the plants, but its hardly covert.....

I get frosts from first week in September on.... hard enough to give a layer of ice to a bucket of water type of thing....

Gonna bump this and ask everyone did you find the dates for the first frost of autumn accurate in BP's little map?

I tried the calculator in the link and it was late for my last frost though the predictiton for the first frost of the year seems more accurate in the web link for where I live.

I think BP's little map is a little conservative for the last frost in spring for where I live.

Could be worth adding both the link and the map to one of the stickies for easy reference.
