Full Version: Spider Mite Control Using C02

Ok so I am going to be making a small box about 1m sq and 2 m high and I will be pumping it full of c02 in order to own my mites. I plan on hanging a floro in it as well to make the plant stay awake since plants use less O2 in the day...

Questions:

How much O2 do plants need during the day?
What a good ppm to use?
How long can the plants take it?

I have heard everywhere from 3000,5000,10,000 to 15,000 ppm for anywhere from 15 min to 8 hours....

I'm going to go ahead with this anyways and use a few "throw away" moms and try this regardless but I wouldn't mind some advice!

air contains 350 ish from what i remember so 5000 has got to send any air breathing animal to sleep lol.gif

as with any about SM killing ...... great thread!!!! cool.gif

You don't think a bottle of SBPI might not be cheaper and easier ? unsure.gif

but couldnt the co2 way be used right up to chop if needed?

I don't want to spray ANYTHING on my plants. I dislike it...It builds up spray resistant pests....which is why every hydro store tells you to rotate you sprays...I would rather just starve them of oxygen. + once the box is setup and working properly I can probably attack a mite problem really quickly and easily...Just put the plants into deep space and clean the room while the mites suffocate. The re introduce ladybugs... smile.gif

Also you could use this all the way until chop and apparently the mites go pop if you get the ppm just right and you don't get the snap crackle at the end of it all. wink1.gif

Edit: If the mites get resistant to not breathing then they can go live in space and fuck off from planet earth right? tongue.gif

Ok so I'll post some pics tomorrow or sometime soon on the system I set up. So far I think it is going to work well...although I have to do it outside and I step away every 30 seconds to make sure I am getting enough air.....

The sniffer that I got only reads up to 2000 ppm and I'm a bit sore since it cost me 600 bucks! If anyone can point me to a sniffer that can read high enough (10-15k ppm) that would be awsome.

Anyways to get on with it:

I can't get a perfect seal with this thing but since co2 is heavier than air I put the clones and small moms in a barrel and pumped them with co2. The barrel was as sealed as I could make it on top. I had to cut a hole to slide in the ppm reader + light + co2 tube and this didn't help...

I turned the co2 on pretty heavy and since I knew how fast it hit 2k i roughly knew how fast i could get it to 10k....then I put it on a slow drizzle and let sit for 15 min.

All the lady bugs died...this was a good sign in my opinion lol.gif. I also used a loop and found spider mites. But none that were moving. Which is good stuff for now. I have to do the treatment every 5 days or so to get the eggs but I should be over this infestation pretty quickly. Fingers crossed.

All for around 1k bucks.

Been lazy on the pics. The barrel wasn't strong enough to do what I wanted and my PPM meter only goes up to 2500 ppm and that's 1/4 of the min I need to read.

Does anyone know where I can find one that reads that high? Best I can find only reads up to 5k ppm..... whistling.gif

Edit: I dunked everything in azotrol today....It seems to be ok so far...we shall see.

is 10k what you need to kill them? is there no way of working it out using chamber size/L per min of co2?

feed in at the bottom and vent at top to release air as the chamber is filled with co2.

good to see some pics cool.gif

Are you forgetting about the eggs..? You can't CO2 them.
Yodel
I know you can't C02 eggs smile.gif They are the worst of the worst. Asatrol gets most of the eggs but you will still end up with about 25% of the eggs remaining at the base of the leaf....Asshole mites. I've taken to dunking my plants which has been hell! Sigh.
