how do people cool.gif

first venture into legal growing for me ! lol.gif im wanting to grow a pineapple ....tree? for my livingroom. ive had a little nosey on google about it but we all know theres only one place to go if you need to grow wink.gif so was hoping for a bit of advice if anyones done one before.

will my lev+/coco pro+ mix be a good medium for one? biobizz nutes/granules/catalyst do the job ok? now i dont want it getting too big , 4-6ft at most cos my front room isnt exactly spacious! how quick do they grow? and whats the best way to stop one and keep it at the desired height?

cheers for any advice smile.gif
Bad Penny.
I was at the worlds largest pineapple plantations earlier this year in the foothills of Mt Matutum, wierd thing, all the local schoolkids nick them on their way to school as a snack and the acid corrodes their front teeth unsure.gif They have just came up with a new variety not as acidic, cant for the life of me remember the name however unsure.gif My mate is one of the top guys for DOLE,I will ask him about growing pineapples wink.gif
Bad Penny.
MG3......been trying to think of it,thats the variety with low acidity wink.gif
sky
nice one smile.gif , great pics too!

from the little ive read to get a decent size pineapple the plants need to be pretty big but this one will just be a houseplant with added novelty so not bothered about any fruit etc will just be cool to have something different (small fruits would make it look even better though)

cheers
Bad Penny.
I will try and get some info off my mate,he took me to a place where the pineapple fields stretched for 5 miles across from the road to the mountains,I wasnt really interested in the pineapples, more interested in looking for snakes biggrin.gif The pics give some sort of scale to the size of the pineapple fields.

You know, I always thought pineapples grew on trees tongue.gif

I guess the leaves on top of the fruit should have told me otherwise tongue.gif

I aint got a clue mate, but I will find out for you,I know the asparagus fields are half that size and they are harvested by hand unsure.gif I always said he should grow dope as we have a mutual friend a few miles away who manages a Tuna-cannery wink.gif biggrin.gif But neither of them are that way inclined nea.gif

My daughter used to root pineapple tops in water along with avacado pips and the like years ago. This link may set you right!
Bad Penny.
Those pineapples are harvested by pickers walking behind a boom harvester and loading the conveyor belt,I just got a TXT wink.gif
sky
OT , yeah thats the site ive had a quick scan through (having a full read tonight) , love step one ..... obtain a pineapple ! lol.gif .

BP , i know a few people with farms / nice bits of land that would be perfect for massive crops! like those you know they would say no before i had finished my first sentence lol.gif

going to buy a pineapple tomorrow after ive done some reading and get it started. next i want a coconut tree for the kitchen haha
Bush Cat
That's me learned something today, I would've said pineapples grew in trees pinch.gif
Bad Penny.
I have a farm sky, unfortunately its 7500 miles away, and its not that easy to get crops from A-B but my minds always working,I have coconuts etc on the land ph34r.gif
sky
hmmmmm how hard would it be to pack a coconut shell with smoke ...... lol.gif

so youre the man to tell me how to grow a coconut then ! smile.gif
is step one "obtain a coconut"? haha
Bad Penny.
Got loads of coconuts, banana, papaya, durian,as for how easy to smuggle in a coconut shell, its been done loads of times, last big seizure I heard about in coconut shells was cocaine however unsure.gif
sky
my favourite smuggle was in lead blocks , haas ? or was it warren? coppers laying underneath with cutting torches trying to get boxes out lol.gif

do you reckon a coconut tree is do-able as a house plant?
Puff Adder
I think they're a type of bromeliad (tank plant) which are usually epiphytes i.e. they grow in trees like some arboreal orchids. Pineapples are undoubtedly terrestrial and grow easily enough as pointed out by OT1. They need warmth. The aristocrats and plant hunters of the Victorian age used to grow them in hot houses which gathered heat by fermenting fresh animal dung beneath where the plants were grown. Fascinating plants

you can sometimes buy coconut palms in diy stores, they look brilliant, but its a big con, because they don't last long after being bought. They feed off the endosperm (food store within the nut), but once that's used up they lose vigour very quickly in my experience.
sky
hhmmm after looking around a garden centre last month i dont think i would buy any plants let alone trees! prices are shocking sad.gif and there wasnt a canna bush to be seen ! lol.gif

think i'll forget the coconut and just try the pineapple for now smile.gif havent had chance to read tonight been building an extension for my mavver and didnt pack up and go home till 8pm sad.gif if she didnt let me root cuttings in the spare room when needed i'd complain lol.gif

I remember that sky, cocky warren ph34r.gif Coconut trees get huge mate, wouldnt fancy trying one indoors here in the UK,be interesting to see if anyones done it unsure.gif
sky
how do you get one started? does the coconut contain a seed? i'll give it a go smile.gif

yeah think it was warren , he didnt fook about ! money he made was unreal
Bad Penny.
The nut itself, that big green fucker that is up the tree and sometimes kills people when it falls down is the seed cool.gif Wouldnt have a clue how to start it off,I already had the trees when I bought the land,I can find out for you though wink.gif As for the money, well,we would only spend it so whats the use of having it right? You would soon get sick of gold rolex, beautiful women, nice boat and the associated lifestyle, wouldnt you? unsure.gif
sky
that is the seed !?!? hmmm think it would be way too big a job for my place. definately want a small palm type thing though.

the women wouldnt interest me i had to go through plenty to find the one im with lol.gif but a villa in the mountains of south spain (with a few sq miles of land) , a nice boat and enough in the bank to do what i want would be perfect! it probably wouldnt stop me from getting in a bit of mischief though lol.gif infact having land to grow weed on and a boat would be a jail sentence waiting to happen haha
Bad Penny.
Thats the seed mate, that big fuck-off thing unsure.gif They lie on the jungle floor and a green shoot comes out of them, not very technical at describing them though I have seen thousands, just never took notice of them biggrin.gif Yeah, apart from the Jail sentence I guess we all have the same dream wink.gif Be lucky biggrin.gif

I've grown my own pinapples like that, just twist the top off, peel the leaves off the bottom inch or so, and put it in a glass of water until roots form. Then plant it and let it grow. It can take a couple years or more, but it's a nice plant in the meantime.

You can never have too many plants, regardless of what kind they are.

I was walking across Whale Island's beach in Vietnam a few years ago and this very thing happened.

I was walking along, heard a large thud behind me and turned round and there was a coconut from the tree above me.
If i'd of been 5 seconds slower it woulda got me! pinch.gif
Bad Penny.
They leave quite an indent in the ground and they fall from quite a height ph34r.gif Loads of people are killed every year around the world from falling coconuts, they are far heavier than a housebrick, imagine that being dropped on your head from Xfeet, thats why I never used to shelter under coconut trees during a storm ph34r.gif

Unfortunately that is the truth, but just because the law says something is so doesn't make it right.
