I went up into the grow room today (3rd day in a row) even though i've not really had much to do in there and i noticed one of the plants has some of it's pistil hairs turning brown.
I was reading another diary,Rebel 84's - 4 strains, but mainly cheeses, and he was talking about pistils turning brown as though it was a completely normal thing. I can only assume that it is part of the flowering process and new ones grow in place and do exactly the same thing over and over during bud growth.
Can anyone confirm this so as to ease my mind?
Pistils browning (they ussually actually turn really nice shades of pink and amber in most strains) is a natural part of flowering mate. As the rate of new pistil formation slows the proportion of brown pistils will increase, until eventually new pistil production stops and all the pistils are brown.
Pistil browning can be used as a way to decide on ripeness although more experienced growers go by colour changes in the trichs. The rule of thumb for pistils is harvest when about 80% of the pistils are brown.
Lots of pistils browning very early in flower (prior to about week 4) may be a sign of pollination from stray pollen from a hermie or unidentified male.
Edit to emphasis the Lots in the last sentence. A few pistils browning during week 3/4 of flowering is normal in my experience.
