Right, First off Im disappointed with expensive soil plagron batmix but thats a story for another day.
I thought I'd set off asking you (the peoples) with compost you use for Seedlings AND Large Plants.
Im off to get some soil, I was thinking John Innes No.3 But apparently its shit useless, so no.
Ok peoples, gimme some opinions!

Ive been using JI No. 3 and its working great. Using bio bizz nutes as im at week 4 of flowering and they are looking totally healthy. JAB multi purpose is supposed to be good but ive never used it.

What's wrong with the plagron? Got pictures of the results? I've been using westlands. Some people like it, some don't. I use westlands for everything from cracking seed to cropping bud. Never have problems with it. Used to use B&Q compost for seedlings but I tried the westlands with some perlite and it seemed to work better so that's what I've been doing for a while.

my last grows i used the old westlands MP with great results, well some of best results ive had so far and ive for this grow at the moment started using the Newer Westlands MP Advanced which to be honest im finding a bit dodgy.. Its doing its thing but im finding when it drys out its like really dry and shit, takes a good couple of soakes to get it back to a normal looking soil. plus some of my seedlings were burning in it.
Maybe thats just me, but from what ive heard and seen since they changed the stuff its not as good as it used to be.. but like i said thats jsut from my point of view.
my next grow i'll be lookin for a different soil.

I can't really comment here as it's my first grow but i'm using the John Aurthur Bowers with added JI,mixed with 20% perlite and 10% vermiculite.Seems a nice airy mix,so far so good anyway!

Is the Gold Label any good? Or is Plagron better?

I tried Canna Terra profesional and it doesn't seem to be airy enough
I don't think i've seen a compost much more airy than canna professional

It has got a hell of alot of perlite in it, totally different to the pro+, both great composts if you want to spend that much!
J Arthur Bowers is my favourite from the garden centre, red bag (with added sincro boost) i've never tried the one with added JI. It's my favourite mulitpurpose i've found so far. Bloody cheap too

Take a look at the poll results in
Compost Survey 2009.
From the Garden Centre I dont think you can go far wrong with JAB Multipurpose + JI as recommended above or Westlands Multipurpose + JI as a close second. I've had great results with the regular cheapo JAB MP like KC uses too.
General advice is to avoid pure JI composts they have a tendency to set like concrete and are a bastard to water.

JI for cuttings and seedlings is the one that sets rock hard. No. 3 just goes dry, well mine does anyway but stay away from the seedling and cutting one.
I bought of bag of that Westlands Mp with Ji but it must be different to what most people use as it was horrible. You couldn't even tell when to water as the weight never seemed to change, just seemed to weigh a ton. Got to admit the plants in it looked fine though.

Dont like Canna Terra profesional dries out to much tbh.
For the past two years been using biobizz allmix? Even through seedling stage and NEVER had any burns ect. Funny cause alot of people on here start with light mix then work up, Iv never needed to.

I tried loads of diffrent types of compost last year, I found any compost bought from a B&Q or a homebase was complete crap as they leave it outside and that can give you a whole host of problems from nutes being too low, to fungus gnats not nice.
So try and find a garden centre that keeps there compost stored indoors to stop above mentioned problems.
I then found Westlands MP was to heavy a mix for plants they did not take well to it.
Homebase MP compost and B&Q compost : save yourself some hassel and disappointment, buy something else utter crap.
I found Levingtons MP from a garden centre was quite good all round from seed to finnish.
I am now using Levingtons mixed with john innes MP and allready there is a better result so I would choose J I or levingtons mixed with J I
hope this helps

my last crop yielded a bumper yield, but the compost seemed to go horribly hard towards the end.... Was probably down to watering too heavy, as it was lovely and soft to start with, spongy and nice.... westlands advanced plus. good stuff, just need to be delicate with the watering, fine rose essensial....
I'll be trying coco next time though, just for fun

I have been using J Arthur Bowers MP with added JI, and it hs proved a very good compost for the money, I think about 4 quid for 60 litres. I mixed it with some coco coir because it doesnt dry out nicely on its own and clumps together. I also mixed in some worm castings to improve the microbial activity because this is where it was lacking.
I know I will get shot down in flames but BioBizz AllMix is a bloody good compost if you are not looking to add any further ingredients. 15 quid for 50 litres is steep but it performs as good as the JAB without needing to add the extras.

im on my first in compost using lev+ji with about 30% canna coco pro+ mixed in and all is well . no setting rock solid and it holds water for a few days

Im geting good results with
Westlands Hanging Basket - less wood pulp than the WMP+JI
Hanging basket has 25%JI - 5% more than WMP+JI and has water retaining chrystals
Got my biggest buds with JI3 and a bit of coco - didnt taste great
I might stock up with Hanging Basket compost as i got caught out last year!

The gnats themselves are not the problem, it is their horrid little white grubs, that chew through stems at soil level.

I have been using Westlands Adv + but it is disappearing locally. I had to buy it in grow bags as they only had Westlands MP in sacks down at my local garden centre. Looks like they are phasing it out. It can be a little hot for seedlings/cuts so I cut it with a 1/3 perlite in these situations but other than that I have found it to be light and have good drainage. It is a lot lighter than regular compost so you have to readjust your senses when using the pot weigh method of watering.
