Hi all,
Got meself a bad prob
I dried out some Snow White, chopped it off all the stems then whacked it into a jar.
For the first few days the bud smelled ok. Kinda fruity type smell to it. Then the smell changes over night to a kinda cheese burger type smell (it's the closest I can get to the smell)
The bud felt a bit damp at this stage so I take it outta the jar and lay out to dry even more. The bud is now totally dry and after 3 more days in the jar it started to stink of cheese burgers again

I've now left the lid off for 4 days and it is still stinkin

There is no sign of rot anywhere.
What is the smell?
What should I do? Should I just turn it all into bubble hash?
Suggestions welcomed with open arms
Have a good'n

it's normal, some smell strong some smell nice and some hardly smell at all...
curing takes time, you was doing the right thing up until you left them out for 4 days....
the smell might get worse, but the taste should get better....
keep them in the jars, opening them everyday to air them...
closing the jar makes the water draw from the center of the plant,
into the dry leaf tips, then opening dries the flower tips again.
it dries more evenly and improves the taste...

Where can we get these curing jars that people are using?
£1.85 for a litre jar from Tesco's, they do a 1.5L one as well, can't remember how much though.

Try your local kitchenware store, they do those storage jars with the Grolsch type sealing lids. Theyre great for curing.

The SW is in a curry sauce jar and the BBJ is in a Dolmio's sauce jar.
The BBJ is smelling
REALLY fruity now and the hit is absoloutly mind blowing

I didn't realise that curing had such an effect.
The SW is still stinking, the high isn't that great neither

Mind you it was a nirvanna strain so I wasn't holding me breath anyways
If you've never cured your bud before it is a must, well worth the wait and you can really notice the difference by each day that passes *takes a big whiff, mmmm fruity

All the best peeps

that sound horrid j,you can clean it with bleach and hot water then store some bicarbonate soda in it for a couple of weeks....

that should get rid of it...
if you keep cut onions or curry in your fridge, a little bicarb in an eggcup will also stop your fridge smelling aswell....
you can also sprinkle it in your trainers to keep them fresh.........

the only thing that ever really helped my buds smell nice, when they smelled like arsehole was to put some orange peels in the jars. one plant on my last grow already had a very strong, citrus smell, so i didn't need to do that

P.S. is bi-carb any good as a fungal protector? can it be sprayed directly onto plants?

I have some jars saved up ready for curing, but they do smell. I will try to wash them out with bleach and get some air fresh tablets or something. But if I can't get rid of the smell does that affect the smell of the drying buds a lot?, or will the curing buds overpower the smell in the jar? or worse affect the quality of the smoke?
although buds tasting of honey roast chicken doesn't sound too bad. Not sure about branston pickle though!!

, yeah i'd had to smoke a blunt that tasted like a pickle....sheesh!
If anyone is worried about the seal smelling still....look through the cushions in your couch and gather about 75cents to buy another set....

Checked the jars this morning, I left the tops off for a week and there is no smell in the jars. The lids were a different story, so am soaking them all day and see if that helps.
Not harvesting for about 3-4 weeks so got time.

You could try using VWP steriliser/cleanser to wash out jars to get rid of the smell. It's used to clean winemaking and brewing equipment. I've used it for that purpose and it's great stuff - you just leave things to soak in it. I'm pretty sure it kills odours, and any homebrew shop will sell it.
Take a look:

ok REALLY REALLY stupid question

!
can Jars be anyold jar (like the ones which has things like jam init etc), does it havbe to be the ones where you can seal them?
how long can you store the bud? because i'd like to store some of my outdoor grow for the summer if its anygood.

the answer is both... any food jar you find will have a seal on it... think about it, if it didn't, the food would go bad very quickly.

I use dishwasher powder to clean my jars and bongs. Works extremely well.
I am a new convert to curing but am way sold on it now! I am down to smoking kief I've cured in glass jars and although the gear was fairly rank to begin with it is a really smooth smoke now

(though I need to smoke twice as much to get half as stoned)
cheers, BN

Curing jars should be airtight. Go for the rubber seal ones. Jam jars and the like are only airtight when sealed in the factory. those are no good unless the cap is sucked in.
Airtight or not, mold will happen if its damp. You can put silicon gel cap bags in the jars to attract any moisture and stop the mold- especially if its packed in too much.

yeah, this whole curing thing turns out to be alot more important than i ever thought! explains some of the crap skunk ive had over the years. looked great, smelt great - but barely touched the sides as far as getting me buttered.
