Hi you all,

I've been quietly lurking on the forums here for a few months now and gotta say I'm really impressed with/by what a nice bunch of knowledgeable gardeners contribute their experience here. You really are a helpful bunch - only rudeness I've seen is to queries from the 50Kw get rich quick prats.

Dunno if it's been mentioned before, but, seems to me that Hydro/Soil home grown has become the the hobby of choice for a predominantly male bunch of dudes who in earlier years would have been building whisky stills, brewing potent beer, racing pigeons and doing whatever it is that people do with ferrets. Nice...

Anyway, this is supposed to be an introduction:

I'm a man who's been lucky, maybe determined, enough to travel round a big chunk of this amazing planet.
I used to be known as a man who was wise before his years. The years have caught up.

Grow wise I've previously had a few Lowryders gracing my green house, nothing special but a nice smoke.
This year I've decided that there's too much paranoia with external grows and decided to go down the hydroponic route.
I'm doing a loft grow and have just been through the fun of creating a space up above that's comfortable enough to play in.

I've learnt a hell of a lot from reading the posts here but, (correct me if I'm wrong), there doesn't seem to be an idiots guide to converting your loft from a heatwave hellhole of misery to a nice workspace e.g. Step 1 - is it worth doing? Step 2: Is that a wasps nest?
Has such a guide been written - should I write one?

Getting late here.
Night All.

Watcha dmt and welcome to uk420 biggrin.gif

I'm a loftee... with minimal height too...was told once it wasn't worth growing up there but my continuous flow of buddage for the last 2 years suggests otherwise 13.gif

Not seen a specific guide to loft grows..and would certainly be worth writing something to show any potential new loft converters thumbsup.gif

Thanks for the welcome and feed back people.

Think Withnail's right that there isn't a specific guide to loft grows here - the info is there but it's scattered across the forums.
I'm thinking that the forum on grow room design would be a good place to start a thread on this??
I'll have a ponder on the content and try and get the something started over the next few days.

Heh! I layed some carpet in the loft today - sorta tiring after caning it a bit too much last night.
Can I include a section on the use of child/third world labour (I'm seeing a hammock in the loft...) or would that be against forum rules?

Arnold Layne - you worry me - stay away from lofts :-)!

Welcome DMT, superb choice of name, love it stoned.gif
My first grow was in a loft, I screwed down a bunch of misfit planks and stuff to stop us falling through, but the beams were a nuisance! I hope youve got a nice "lofty" loft thumbsup.gif
Peace

"Ah twat it... That damn cheese made me so incoherent that ive started my grow diary in general growing questions! Do I need a moderator to move this or can I do it myself? Please help! Im an idiot!"

Ah, a man after me own heart :-)

Hi DMT and welcome

The key to loft growing is a supply of househould air

Cool in summer

Warm in winter

I used to intake from a built in wardrobe in bedroom below

Then i found a void from loft down the gable end

People on here have made holes into chimney stacks and walls many a time !

Hi Heyboy,

Good point - at the mo I'm using a couple of 4" ventilation grills cut into the loft window (the window faces an alleyway down the side of the house and isn't visible from the street or neighbours place). Downside is that I'm at the mercy of outside ambient air temps - mitigated a bit by using a temp controlled variac on the fans but reckon it will cause prob's in the extremes of summer/winter. I'm a bit reluctant to start cutting holes through the floor into the bedroom below (I can imagine my wifes reaction!). Might take the intake feed through the loft hatch though - see how it goes with the present set up. Think the other point that people may not consider when they start out is that the environment needs to be nice for the grower as well as the plants - balancing your way along the joists in 90F/-5 temps while fending off pigeon fleas sorta takes the fun out the grow.
