any one know if these are any good .... there used in the catering industry .. and range in price from 24 /45 pounds or so
They have huge selection in stock ... but as I have never had to use one before so any help would be most welcome

I think its a dimmer type fan controller, your looking for a variac which is a variable transformer, this will ensure its silent and you dont get the humming that you would from the dimmer type controllers.
Greens Horticulture have actually started to sell a 5 step variac based fan controller, its about £70 i think which is not to bad cause you'll pay £50 ish for a variac then you need to house it and those boxes can be another £20 easily plus all the pissing about building them

thanks mate .. thats all I needed a vote of confidence and a nod in the right direction ... will wait and get the greens one ..........
it was on me short list .... what do you think of there multi one ? the one that does heaters as well .. would that be a non variac to?

Ye i'm sure i looked at the evo one and its a dimmer type to.
I'm running an airforce fan controller which is just a variac already built up in a box, it cost like £140 ish though so pretty expensive, i'm going to build my variac up soon though as i need it for my veg area thats about to get built.

i use a fantronic fan speed controller on my extractor fan in my opinion they are excellent so much so that i purchased a second one when i thought i was going to go down the hydroponic route, i built my own watering system using a pond pump which was too fierce so i used a fantronix controller to slow the pump down regards kk
