A friend of mine has just underwent knee surgery and he likes a toke. the doctors told him his blood pressure is a bit low. He is a professional athlete so is in very good shape. goes to the gym everyday etc.

so is it the cannabis that would cause low blood pressure?

Some folks (*I'm one of 'em) have naturally very low BP. Mine is bargain basement, all but non-existant kind of low. I am still on meds to keep it down, and protect the ol' ticker. My Cardio chap said (off the record) that my use of cannabis gave him no cause for concern. I seem to recall he suggested watching it if I feel dizzy and not to stand up quick.
From experience I know this: It aint wise to take a sudden hot bath after a mild attack of angina whilst stoned, whilst also taking ACE Inhibitors, Beta-blockers, Opioids and then, just to round things off, a spray of sub lingual glyceryl tri-nitrates to dissolve the angina.
Now that's when you know just how low your BP can go w00t.gif Its a long way. And not altogeher pleasant spliff.gif

On the serious side: I've never heard any cardio-consultant type urging his/her patients to stop using dope. Usually, the very opposite.
Not saying it doesn't happen. But I've yet to haer of it.

NO expert but i was under the impression that canna helps with blood flow or something something to do with the slightly increased heart rate some experience (im not one, i think mine is gonna stop sometimes) i think that the arteries widen a bit which is a good thing but maybe that could cause the blood pressure to drop.

As is always the way with the glorious herb he will be fine if its used sensibly and in moderation imo, just tell him to go easy on the bucket bongs!! and i cant see that the wonderful herb could cause him any problems. try asking on the daily mail site see what they recon, they probably take a different view. ROFL

As your freind is an athlete (hope this is correct) he may want to be careful about using canna if he is competing, apparently the atletics bodies consider canna a performance enhancer and he may be disqualified if made to take a drugs test even if he aint toked for a week or so they will still find the cannabinoids (sp?) in his system, a month of not chonging will see him clear tho.

Hope this is of some use.

All the best to you and ya pal.

e2a: you dont spell week with 2 k's but i apparently do! lol.gif. and i didnt somehow read the knee surgery thing in the first line of your post, so i'll assume he is out of competition for a while. what would be interesting to know is (if he is a runner) how much if any quicker can he go with canna in his system, with the large arteries and improved blood flow i think it may be surprising.

It will be your mates fitness that keeps his blood pressure low, athletes usualy have a low resting heart rate too. spliff.gif

hi dazed, I'm an athlete too and I use cannabis on a daily basis, I find it helps my muscles to relax both pre and post workouts, I even compete high as we dont get tested for it.

Ive used it in injury rehab for pain and stress relief and personally Ive always been fine. My advice would simply be to smoke as normal, listen to your body and if need be, smoke less or more smile.gif

I always thought it lowered your blood sugar level and that if you feel a bit dizzy/faint or even a whitey then eat some chocolate to raise your blood sugar a bit unsure.gif

Yes, it does lower blood pressure in some people.

"The House of Lords Science and Technology Committee report on medical cannabis acknowledged that smoking cannabis can lower blood pressure, but warns that it may also increase heart rate in some users (7). They concluded that the latter effect may pose a health risk for patients with a history of angina or other cardiovascular disease, and recommend that they be excluded from any clinical trials of cannabis-based medicines."

Seems a cannabinoid called cannabigerol may be responsible:

"Working under the supervision of Prof. Raphael Mechoulam at the Hebrew University School of Pharmacy, Maor, who was born in Brazil and immigrated to Israel in 1998, has created a synthetic version of a minor cannabis constituent named cannabigerol, which is devoid of psychotropic activity.

In laboratory experiments with rats in collaboration with Prof. Michal Horowitz of the Department of Environmental Physiology, it was found that this novel compound reduced blood pressure when administered to the rats in relatively low doses. Additional testing also showed that the compound also brought about another beneficial effect -- relaxation of the blood vessels. A further beneficial property observed in work carried out with Prof. Ruth Gallily of the Lautenberg Center for General and Tumor Immunology, was that the compounds produced an anti-inflammatory response"

Well said gents, I just saw this and was going to say exactly these things thumbsup.gif My other half was an athlete many years ago and she still has ridiculously low BP

As you can see, no easy answer....
It can be:
Normal consitution of the person. In fact to see if you really have got low blood pressure you should have a reference point for it.
It could be the fact that he is an athlete. good examples come from long distance swimmers. So it even depends on the sport.
It could be the weed or a particular interaction from that strain with him
It could be the medecines he is tacking or the simple fact that he is recovering from surgery.

For him would be quite easy to state out wich one beacuese, if he is fealing low blood pressure dizziness for the first time, he has only got to realize what's the new event in his life.

Personally i get low blood pressure from cannabis. but it depends on wich strain i smoke. Really.

Ah, if he is getting anti inflammtory drugs, and with knee surgery he must have, certanly he has got low blood pressure. Wich becomes more evident when the effects of the drugs lays off. And remeber that the shite that suppress inflammation usually stays in your system for more then one month.

Btw, how can you falks smoke and be athlete, it really is a mistery for me.
Every time i swmmed seriously in my life, i had to quit smoking!
Gee, i envy you people biggrin.gif

i've got ridiculously low bp too. raynauds syndrome ontop of that. this thread's been a bit of a treasure trove of info and name-drop launchpad for further internet researchings (particularly the CBG). i've noticed some strains help de-constrict and some aggravate the raynauds. it's be good to get to know my way around the cannabinoids so that i might be able to get the de-constricting without lowering my already verging on dangerously low bp.

as was mentioned in this thread (amongst other savvy advice), listen to your body.

.... though getting a sphygmomanometer might b a wise too (i say realising that's what i'm gonna go look into right now).
