OK, off to Rotterdam - so does anyone have any tips?

I want to go and see their bridge, and they have other great buildings there. Most old stuff was razed to the ground during the war, so they rebuilt it fancy, loike.

Any tips on coffee shops would be great - especially if we can sit outside - not sure how that'd work. Bit like Abraxas in the 'Dam, perhaps?

sorry, i couldn't resist popping in here when i saw rotterdam.

i was the passenger in a car driving from munich to the uk. the driver was an american expat with a horrendous sense of direction who thought he'd seen jesus.

we were on our way to the channel tunnel but somehow ended up in rotterdam. he thought north to amsterdam was the way to france.

really.... i wish the bugger had slown down but it was 90mph all the way. i am sure the imprint of my right foot is still there slamming on the imaginary brake in his car.

I found it to be quite industrial, but I recon it's what you make of it Like anywhere.

If you do find it to be particularly drab....... most places in Holland are only a short train ride away. Cheap as chips too!

i found a coffee shop i think called gone with the wind 2 yrs ago but good smoke good budtender he was nearly 13!!! i think but young but o.k

OK - how about this...

Anyone recommend a place to visit that is a not-to-bad train ride from Rotterdam Centraal? This is not really a smoking trip, by the way.

Utrecht and Den Haag are lovely places and not too far

e2a- If your off to the Dam on the train, Antwerp is the same distance in the opposite direction....I think

No, we're flying in but Rotterdam Centraal is 3 mins round the corner from our friends house.

When I was there I took a look at the Euro mast tower from a distance and also went over the Erasmus bridge which was a different experience having not gone over a bridge that modern before. Kind of impressive aswell how they have the old section that survived the bombing and the rebuilt new section, some of the architecture is quality IMO.
Don't know what it is like for hiring cars in Rotterdam but the idea of driving around the Delta works has always appealed to me.

Utrecht looks a lot nicer....

I think it's called Culture Boat (been 5yrs) the address is Wittevrouwensingel 206 3572 CE Utrecht. Really chilled and enjoyable place for an afternoon smoke and a game of checkers Used to drop in every evening on my way home from work.

Generally though Utrecht is a really nice place to visit. Lots of old stuff and a great atmosphere. When I was there anyway.

Utrecht is lovely, imagine amsterdam after a really good cleanup and you're part way there. Canals but no red lights, coffee shops with no drunken english hens/stags outside to avoid. Utrecht is also quite close to a couple of decent theme parks, if that's your thing.

Although Rotterdam had its moments, I found a coffeeshop with no seating and went on a boat tour of the docks; if containers are your thing you'll love it

If you're going with your missus you'll love Utrecht, then. It's a lot more honeymooney than stag/hen and should be right up your strasse. Tell her the shopping is excellent and you won't be able to stop her (and it is, especially if she likes shoes, not clogs )

Check out Efteling theme park, there's a few power rides, but mostly its a trippy, weird fairy tale type place; well worth a stoned days exploring with a few thrills, if you're up for it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Efteling

Make sure you book a hotel in the city centre and not outside it. We were miles away from anything in a rephotel on the outskirts of the city and waiting for buses got very boring, very quickly.

Your other alternative is go to Den Haag and visit the seaside at Scheveninger. Its like a 1950's Blackpool with more weed and a groovy jazz festival. There's also a huge group of bendy people statues on the seafront, I loved the place.
