Right people i came up with this idea about 5yr ago and it works a treat .But iv seen a few posts recently asking dose it work , is it safe bla bla bla
So iv just knocked one up for my new room so thought id show ya's how to do it it took 10 mins max

1st step Click to view attachment get a box the fan will fit in

2nd step Click to view attachment wrap the fan in a bin bag or cling film this is so the foam dosent stick to ya fan

3rd step Click to view attachment once its wrapped up place it in the box

4th stepClick to view attachment iv put the ducting on the fan to save time later make sure you tape around the ducting real good

5th step Click to view attachment fill with foam i normaly tape the whole thing up 1st but i did it this way to show ya it

6th step Click to view attachment rush like a fucker to get it tapped up b4 the foam gets every were

and there you have it one boxed fan wink.gif
bizzaro73
shit hot bro,..do ya fasten it up whilst the foams still wet?...or let it ezpand out n dry kinda..??. wink.gif
leepy
Forgot to add this is the stuff ya wanna be using Click to view attachment

no tape it up fast as ya like bizz then just stab the box with a pencil m8 to make sure it dont blow ya box apart if youv put too much in

PS DO NOT USE A FULL TIN

hi ya leepy

great idea ... just about to get a new fan so I will use that ... as I'm here .. I can ask you a question ..... ok my new grow space is walk in larder its normal room hight and 5 feet long and 2 feet wide ... at the back of the wall at floor level and ceiling hight there are two 12*12 inch vents ... they work on the principle of cooling by convection (in the old days) and from inside to out side is about 10 inches ....depth ... perfect for air in and out ...but very close to a walkway (15 feet or so)

The problem I see is going to be the noise from the air rushing out side ....has not far to go ... so what I'm thinking is this .... if I use a 6 inch fan ... but use a long length of over size ducting say at 10 inch ... do you think this would decrease the noise as it has less constriction .. and use a length of 20 feet in a snake fashion so the air has longer to travel and hopefully less noise ? any thoughts on the matter would be help full ... as I have never had to use a fan and filter before as I always grew out in the sticks before now ......... or am I of the track ??

thanks

Bro my man HS was going to do the excact same thing venting though an old airbrick BUT the old girl next door to him had her washing line fixed about 12in away from it so i came up with building a bottomless box for ya ducting to go into put some rockwool from your loft in it an stick the box over the airbrick mucka hope this helps ya m8 leepy

ps im using rockwool in my extractor to do the same thing stop the wooshing noise an it works quite well

nice 1 leepy mate, think ill be trying them out in me new grow room,

think ill use some 1/4 ply for mines though as im gonna put a hook on each corner and hang them from bungees aswell

plus i got the ply and nearly a full box of expanding foam in the garage , only borrowed it from work of course rofl.gif

do you recon i should drill a few say 10mm holes , one on each side to fill it, or would 1 hole be enough as its expanding ?

cheers mucka cool.gif

gr8 idea gonna try this me thinks

This is definately the one for me - the easiest i have seen so far - but being a total baboon when it comes to elctric things - i forgot to wire up before putting in the box - luckily the other half pointed out to me that I needed to some sort of cable with a plug on the end...DOH..

nice one for posting this up!

Great stuff leepy, I'll be using this method tommorow when I setup the homebox again.

What do you need to do to un-assemble? I haven't used expanding foam before - is it soft at all? Could you just cut it away?

Cheers, DB.

Hey leepy matey smile.gif

thanks for the pics, i had already decided to give it ago when i heard you mention in your other post about it, seeing the pics have confirmed my noob DIYness can cope easily. Nice one! thumbsup.gif

Got a new stealth growdrobe project on the go and i need those fans to be quiet.

Great idea. If I actually grew I'd be using this method. Thanks.

Nice one, got 2 x 315mm RVK fans, I reckon when they go on it is gonna be loud as feck, might use this idea if they are noisy, excellent. guitar.gif

As for the filter thats another story, that looks like it has just fell off an aircraft, the thing is huge and weighs a ton. rofl.gif

'allo everyone,

I wanted to share in this topic. I just happen to be getting 3 fans all boxed up the Leepy Way™. I thought I might share how this yank is doing it. Big thanks to Leepy for teaching us this method and for letting me share in this. yes.gif thumbsup.gif notworthy.gif

I also want to mention that this is more aimed at those who perhaps don't build a lot. For the Master Craftsmen out there, pleas excuse my over explaining of things.

Two Steps:

1) Boxing

2) Foam

So first I'll show some fancy, way out west box construction techniques and then tomorrow I'll show my foam pour.

The sequence of images is a bit off so let me draw a map. For the images in this post, below, I'll be referring to their numbers. Images are laid out like this;

4321
5

1) 6 inch elicent duct fan in a box. Note how deep the box is. This has to be modified for my needs.
2) Duct fittings. They are rotate-able 4 inch and 6 inch couplers (90 to 180 degrees) and a few reducrers, 4-6 inch
3) Duct fitting on fan. You can see the aluminum duct tape holding it in place. On this side I had to use vertical strips.
4) Other side of the fan. The angle here was better so I used a wide strip of aluminum tape horizontally.
5) But before I put on the tape, the metal surfaces get a quick iso alcohol wipe.
Randalizer
I should perhaps explain why I did it this way. I needed couplings of some sort to poke through the box for my acoustic ducting to fit onto. And I plan on laying the fan on its side on top of my tent. The ducting needs to make a right turn just under the tent ceiling and just above the tent ceiling (space restrictions) so these adjustable right angle pieces filled both needs neatly.

This will be a conventional order, left to right, top to bottom.

1) Fan wrapped and in box. Sides have been cut to desired size. These sides (4), combined with the original box flap tops will form the top for my now newly shortened box

2) To work with the box, I stand it on one duct fitting and raise the box to where I want it, using wood blocks.

3) Another look at the completed fan and fittings

4) The lines where I will cut the box side/lids off at.

5) Find the center of the cardboard pieces and draw a circle centered there, using another bit of 6 inch ducting as a round rule edge. I plan to cut just outside the drawn circle.

6) Success!

7) & 8) how the cord was fitted through.

8) Getting there!

9) And so. The box is now ready to be filled with foam. I have a mix liquid that produces a rubber gel. I'll have pictures of that on the morrow.

Until then good folk.
Chilli-CON-Charlie
This is the most practical and best idea ive seen yet on 420, cheers mate, im gonna pass your info on to me mate who has a 200mm Rvk which is a loud bastard, tar!
Nausicca
This is pretty much what I did as well. The problem is most of the sound doesn't come from the actual fan, it comes from the 'wooshing' sound of the air being moved.
Randalizer
thats why I have silencers and accostic ducting as well. wink1.gif

Thats what I always thought.
Recently I bought a 200mm Acoustic cabinet fan and ran air through insulated oversize ducting.(cooling 4 600w lights-running full bore for 12 hours). I keep having to go over to it to see if its turned on. Its shifting same air as 250 it replaced and its LOADS quieter.

Gonna do the foam box thing on the old one. I have a dba meter so might do a quick test so see how much sound reduces.

BTW. This may be news to some- Your local air conditioning wholesalers is loads cheaper than your hydro shop. I tell em I have a joinery workshop that needs good ventilation. Loads of help and advice. Some will do great deals for cash/no invoice.

Topping idea Leepy.

Yours quietly

i agree less bends helps but its a hard one will be interested to see the results.stonedbritania brought an acoustic fan once and it was louder than his rvk.

Randalizer,
What type of silencers do you use.? How do you rate em? Do they restrict airflow much?

Sorry if this is a hijack.

Take this thread to CUBA. ph34r.gif

Hi Ilpapa,

No hijacking here my friend! If you want to read about my silencers click here. I'll be installing my new 6 inch fan, acoustic ducting, silencer tonight, report tomorrow in the link I gave you. wink1.gif However I will say they are rated at over 20 dB down @ 1KHz. Very impressive to me. yes.gif

notworthy.gif Believe me, it took a lot longer than 5 minutes! lol.gif

I have acoustic flex ducting but hate making right angle bends with it plus I needed a coupler of some sort to slip the ducting on and off easily.
Randalizer
uhhh. Waay behind schedule. Did the foam pour tonight. Here are some pictures. After I post them all up, I go back and edit in the text.

It's a two part kit, in a 2:1 ratio. For this one 6 inch fan I used 1/4 so 32:16 ounces = 48 ounces total.

I used a new bucket to mix in. I poured in 16 oz of water and then another 32 oz, each time marking the top of the water line inside the bucket.

First component is poured in.

The store that sold this kit had these mixers as well so I just put it on my cordless drill.

Safety when spinning noxious, highly viscous fluids at high speeds! fear.gif

The box. I cut two pour holes in the corners as these go straight to the bottom. Then another vent hole in the center. The process of pouring the 2nd component in, mixing throughly and pouring it all in takes about a minute. The foam rises up in about another minute. It's fast!

Once I poured the liquid in and could see foam arising, I taped over the pour holes.
Randalizer
The foam just came up to the vent hole. I did good! thumbsup.gif

Here you can see the corner where the pour hole was. The tape that I very quickly applied bubbled out a bit.

I'm a little concerned about the foam filling in the area near where the duct fitting is attached to the fan. I'm going to cut open the box there and check to see if it got foamed well. If not, I have some in a can to spot fill if need be.
leepy
Im thinking that foam you'v got rand is going to do a better job than the stuff in a can thumbsup.gif thumbsup.gif
Randalizer
Hiya Leppy! thumbsup.gif

Yea, i got lucky. Just happened to see it in a store front window as I was walking to the hardware store to buy foam in a can. We don't get the stuff in a tube you have earlier in this topic (or is that an aerosol can of foam?). We do get foam in an aerosol can that really kinda don't work so well. They suck really. lol.gif But I did buy a big can for spot work.

The foam came in two types. A rigid and a spongy. I got the spongy and it is very pliant under finger tip pressure. Might have a winner here! yahoo.gif

It better work. This stuff was fookin expensive! 34.gif

Tried it and found there was no difference at all with noise/buzz.
Then i changed from a primair to an Airforce controller.
Then i took the fan out of the insulated box.
Not a sound now, get a decent fan controller and all will be well.
I have ordered a s&p environment controller

Certainly is not noise when your fan is running at 1rpm whistling.gif
OeN
Must admit i did it and didnt really find any noticeable differance to it be fixed onto a main brick wall, the main noise seems to be from the ducting and i have sorted this by insulating it again....only noise i get now is from the intake whoosh... yahoo.gif yahoo.gif

WOOOOOOO...Down Boy... i didnt notice much differance compared to the differance of modifiying the ducting instead, could also be the foam, chill winston, people dont always agree bud... doh.gif wink1.gif rofl.gif

You'll have to forgive leepy. He's an excitable sort. wink.gif

Acoustics and hearing is a tricky science and at times, quite subjective. What sounds loud to one person, may not sound loud to someone else. The physical space and materials in it can affect sound and affect it differently at different frequencies. Different frequencies often have different propagation charachteristics. These characteristics can greatly alter what you do finally hear.

Air noise has several components and no one technique takes care of all issues. I've used Leepys foam box technique and it has helped, but is only one aspect of my overall approach to mitigating noise from having to move large volumes of air about.
