Hello there, these 4 Blueberry girls were the runts, they grew from self polinated dutch passion stock. They started life looking like old wrinkles, seems to grow ok, had a little stretch but nothing too drastic. Just before planting out, they looked like making a recovery. Nice green stems, fresh green tips. Planted from a plastic pint pot, to some 15l pots with homebase multipurpose. No feeding has been done since. They were on the way to making a recovery of sorts but look pretty nasty now. They are outdoors in a wasteland, nestled in some brambles.

Problems are rife. Beetroot red stems, leaf curl, brown spots, small leaves. Only 1 looks OK. I want to nurse them back to health, but need some help.

My plan of attack:
1. feed some epson salts to hopefully get some green back to the leaves.
2. a week later some phosphurus to stop the purpleness
3. add some guano and add a little mulch to keep them moist and warm.
4. not sure what to do next. biggrin.gif should I top them?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Here's the casualties... 1st 1 is the healthiest...

I'm no expert on sick canna, but it looks like over fertilizing to me. Especially the plants with the down curls (ramhorning). To my understanding that is a classic sign of over feeding.

Did you use any chemical nutes? I would just flush with water for now, but be sure to not over water.

I'd agree with Rand mate looks like you've gave them way to much ferts mate, flush them and see what happens i quess.

Dang, these girls have only had rain, not even watering. I used a few drops of root juice in the beginning, and they were quite badly rootbound going into the Homebase Multipurpose. So it's a case of dodgy compost if it's nute burn. sad.gif Poor things, they were never going to win any beaty contests from the start, but I'd love to nurse them back and get some harvest. They get unobstructed sun all day, no rabbits or slugs either. Damn Homebase. Didn't they put out a toxic batch of compost a few years back??

Are they rocking in the wind? The plant in the first picture looks as if it was not firmed in enough when it was potted up. Perhaps firm them in more and add some more compost. It actually looks like hormone weedkiller damage (Anyone been spraying near?), but if it can't be that then the plant is having trouble taking up the food and water it needs - probably because of a root problem. Either they are being torn by windrock,or the jump from a half litre to 15 litre pot has allowed the roots to begin to rot. sad.gif

I reckon at least one of those will recover though.. cool.gif

I'm using homebase MP and it's not doing that to my plants.

Something else has gone wrong there mate.

Its more likely that combination there mate, you said above you've not fed but thats all feed.

I would be curious as to what your nightime temps have been like, as generally cold temps can cause red stems
like yours.

That jump from a pint container to 15L was way too much and your plants look overwatered.

The bad new growth tells me something is going on in the root zone.

So with what little information I have, I would guess cold temps + soggy compost = root rot

Just my two cents,
Kapusta

Cheers guys, as mentioned, they've not been fed anything bar a few drops of root juice as babies. The roots cannot be rotting as it's only rained twice here in 2 weeks, nothing substantial. I reckon I made a noob mistake with the super size pot, plus I didn't even water in at planting due to heavy rain forecast, [which never came]. I did notice a streak of liquid on the top of the soil of one. Looked a little like a dog waz, o dear. Animal urine cannot be healthy either. I'll probably relocate them to nurse them back. I'll update this weekend on the progress...

Cheers for all the help folks!!
