Hi all

I've noticed this week my garlic looking a bit unhealthy.

To me it looks like a nutrient problem, so I gave them some tomorite yesterday. Do you think its underfeeding or something else?
Cheers for any help cheers.gif

BTW, I am unsure what variety these are, I got them from a local gc and the lady said the farmer grows the same variety which grow well apparently.

my garlic , giant garlic and onions all look like that , i think that how they start to look after a while , not very strong leaf structure .
TightBud
same as my shallots mate
and thats what i'm going by as i guess garlic is in the same family?
grown from sets?

shallots are harvested 60-75 days
onions 100-165

they tend to grow the tops in the cooler weather and the bulbs fatten up in warmer weather
the tops turning is usually a sign they're near to harvest
they like alot of water through the growing season then withold water

you should feed them more during the grow period for larger bulbs
it may also be that you have too many in a small area

my shallots are very nearly ready since being in since the end of feb under cloche's
i've tried a few now...just pulled the root off with my thumb wiped it clean and had a good munch
nice and hot

look up garlic cultivation/harvesting...i've not grown it yet, missus don't really like it so just easier to by the odd one now and again

edit .the other thing is ,is usually they are only an inch or so under the soil...maybe just move the soil away from one to see how the development is going....you can always cover it back up again biggrin.gif

Thanks for the info mate. I think I harvest these around august time. You could be right about the size, they do look a bit cramped, maybe thats the reason??

Will try what you mentioned later biggrin.gif Have a peep

Cheers guys, my onions are looking pretty healthy though

They are looking a little rammed, tip for next time, plant them around 10cm apart, should give them plenty of space to get fat
Over the spring i converted my garden into a veg patch, i've got onions, garlic, potatoes, tomatoes, courgettes, allsorts, but the key is to plan in advance and give everything enough space, especially in containers
Maybe you could try planting them out to spread them a bit...
Seems to be looking good though, sure they'll turn out lovely either way

Smokey.

Next time plant them in the ground or a raised bed, they look fine to me but they are too close, when garlic grows it depends on the amount of light each day, if I were you I'd plant them out of that container into open ground as carefully as you can (dont prick them out), we got a month before the longest day so you might get away with it.

Good luck,

I agree with with all that has been said,my mate grows his in a poly tunnel and after a while they always look a bit dried out, good garlic though. stoned.gif

Thanks for all the advice. Yeah, looks to be overcrowding sad.gif Anyways may as well leave these be now and see what results I get. Want to plant another garlic patch, I love garlic.

Never want to run short, so does anyone know how you achieve a continous supply of garlic? (3-4 bulbs a month would be ample)

Cheers cheers.gif
