instructions

Poor some carbon in the mesh like "pencil cup"
just enough so the smaller cup is level with the larger cup.
Slip the smaller cup into the sock
Tuck the sock into the smaller cup holding the end of the sock. Pore in the carbon.. keep holding the end of the sock.
Now pull on the end of the sock and use your finger to guide the carbon into the space between both cups until filled.
Now pull the end of the sock over the entire filter.. twist the end of the sock at the bottom and pull it up over the end of the cup.
Now simply use duck-tape to place the filter over your exhaust fan. I used a rubber band to secure it

spliff.gif just another one for those of you on a budget!!!!!!

cfl reflector

How and where to cut:
Firstly, draw a plan of your cutting path on the outside of the can using a permanent marker or a wax crayon. This will aid you to get a better overview of you plan and to avoid silly mistakes on the way.

Cutting the top part of the can out needs to be done first, adjusting the opening according to the size of your bulb. You do not have to cut it exactly to shape as glue (super or high-temp hot glue) can be used to stick the reflector to the bulb ballast later on. A can opener is the preffered tool for this job. The reflector is purposely not covering the ballast to ensure good aeration and to avoid damage to the ballast components, resulting in a short circuit.

Next, you will need to cut the main part of your soda can in half using your scissors. A hole may need to be drilled first using your kitchen knife to get a good starting point for the scissors.

The inside of the can is coated with a thin plastic layer that should not cause any trouble cutting through the sheet metal. The bottom side of the can does not have to remain in place but leaving it will add stability to the reflector and enhance the reflectivity. An extra hole can be cut into the bottom as well to improve ventilation along the bulb or to connect a 50mm pc-fan to the end.

Lastly, two more cuts have to be made into the sides of the semi-circle reflector to ensure that the sides do not reflect the light back to its origin but rather focus it to where it is needed. The reflector can now be bent according to your light requirements thus making it possible to focus it directly on your plants. If your reflector does not quite fit the bulb yet you can now use glue to stick it to the ballast.

enjoy!!!

if your looking for an even cheaper way us a pc fan connected to some cheap ducting ( found mine in the loft!!) at the other end cut a coke or any other plastic bottles ( has to be straight) leaving a centre ring of around 4 inches shove this in the ducting and secure to the end with masking tape i used it to seal the pc fan to the front, you need to make sure the fan is sucking not blowing out shove this through a hole in your grow area what you will have is an exhaust system!!! the clever part is get a yogurt pot if you used a large coke bottle and cut it in the middle to make the RING the actual yogurt pot and li should fit over the exhaust ring perfectely, make as many holes in the yoghurt pot and lid as you can what you want is good air flow through the pot keep testing it till you get a flow then put your pot in a stocking and fill it with active carbon seal the ends with a knot and place on the exhaust ring!!! VOILA the cheapest replace your own carbon filter system available all DIY.
if you are intrested i have images at your request tooooooo mashed to put them on now spliff.gif spliff.gif spliff.gif

now that sounds like the kinda response i wanted lol.gif. how much is the active? nd where did ya get it from?

i visualise your comment, am a little wrecked at the min, but yes pls do send or post up your pics...mm the bit about making the fan suck rather than blowing out air...ok so how do ya make sure you get it sucking the air? your reply is just wat i wanted coz, i was going to make my own, nd coz im such a cheapskate lol.gif so the pics would be greatly appreciated...mmm sounds like ill have to pull my finger out here...cheers jj69
firemontage
One side of the fan will be sucking air in and the other side will be blowing it away so its just a case of turning the fan around if its blowing air away.

'AnotherHolyFuckwit'
have managed to take a few pics hope they help

the smaller pot i use for my mini grow but just wrap a stocking around the big one and you will get the same effect
notice the lid has as many holes as you can get on it
jj69
this shot will show the fan connected to the ducting wrapped it emergency blanket connected to the coke bottle ring shoved out the hole and the yoghurt pot put in with the smaller end inserted first and the lid put on last to seal it spliff.gif more pics
you can also make an intake as well just remove the carbon pot and reverse the fan to blow in
jj69
shot of the active carbon £4.50 i think more than enough to fill the pot
and a shot to show it works spliff.gif spliff.gif rofl.gif

Once again top marks jj69, now if youll just put that reefer down for a second and take a bow, you deserve the applause clapping.gif clapping.gif

Looks good, i was thinking about how expensive those carbon things with the FANs are and thought it looked easy to build, might make one seeing how it only cost £10 for the activated carbon etc.

they cost £50-100 just for the carbon filter... homemade ftw.
*Hazy*
looking good, nice to see people finding cheaper alternatives and making their own.

I made a diy scrubber a few years back, bit bigger than the ones that have been shown, bout 2.5 foot tall i think, same idea though. i made mine with
wire fencing mesh (not chicken wire), hose clips, tights and various ducting bits and bobs. got the carbon from a large pet store in the fishy section.
only cost around £35 give or take a few £ and was really effective, could refil it too.

cursing myself now lol.gif coz i sold it along with all my other equipment when i went through a "im not growing anymore" phase 34.gif

They just don't cut it though with a grow imho not enough Ooomph and they are not designed to run 24/7... I bought mine from B&Q... thank god for their return policy... bit like undersized filters, not getting at you btw, followed the undersized DIY filter route myself (HERE)... room full of White Russian taught me a lesson, I'd been smug with one northern light.... the missus made me buy a proper CF it but she paid biggrin.gif
