hi ive got 9 blue cheese in greehouse. they are coming up for 5 weeks old on monday and they have been transplanted once from little seedling trays into much larger pots - possibility of finishing in these pots. i have a slight problem, the greenhouse is on private land (i have owners permission) and it quite a way from where i live and i can only go there at the weekend. my friend is doin this grow with me and he sometimes goes there mid-week, but sometimes it's not possible.
this means plants are going to have to go without water for a whole week. will this be ok? if they can not go this long there is someone else i could ask to maybe go mid-week and water but this person doesn't know anything about the grow and we didn't really want to get anyone else involved so i only want to do this if absolutely necessary.
it wouldn't be every week that they go without water, just if my friend can't get there mid-week. what do you think guys?
when we do water them we are tending to saturate the pot -plenty of runoff

cant you dig a hole and put them straight in to the ground, that way you only need to visit once a month or so

What about using a reservoir and drippers or capillary matting.

use big pots,20l at least and if pos dig em into the ground,in a deep hole so the roots search out water wen they need it.and dont tell no1 else. keep it between you and ya m8. just water once per week alot and youl be fine cool.gif

guys thanx for the advice (sorry bout my delay in replying, i've been busy and not had chance to get on here). i hadn't thought about burying the pots into the ground or planting straight into the ground. don't think i could go into the ground as the land owner has not allowed me to go digging up his grass unsure.gif

however, i am able to get hold of the large pots that hav been suggested and will continue to give plent of water when they are watered. if this doesn't work i reckon we could try a dripper system thing. will have to research this one.
many thanks everyone

Hi, I am going away for a week tomorrow, I have just made sure my plants are well watered but also covered the soil with binbag material, to minimise water lost due to evaporation.

Also, you said you water until plenty of runoff, additionally though if the soil is very dry you want to leave the pots sitting in runoff for 20mins-half an hour to make sure the soil has fully absorbed the water - dry soil can "bounce" water off and needs time to soak it up. I have found when I do this the plants will drink up quite a lot of water when left sitting in the runoff.

hi thanks alot for the tips about the plastic bin bags and letting the plants soak up some of the runoff, particularly the idea about the bin bags. very practical and sounds like it will be quite effective as well. i'll definately try that and see how i get on.
weedboy i'm glad to hear your plants have been ok for a week because my plants haven't been watered sinse wednesday and won't be watered until tuesday.

Depends entirely on your conditions. Mine would be dead in 3 days without water - and my biggest pot is a 237 litre SmartPot.
One year I visited the UK for a week in summer and set up a programmed timer to water twice a day. But I donīt like just giving them plain tap (chlorinated) water.

I find mine need watering most days nea.gif Not sure where I'm going wrong, not that its a problem but I hear most people on here water far less often... Would sphagnum moss work at all? Maybe a bit on top of the soil in the pots, but also in some kind of trays under the pots.. Total newbie here but its just an idea.

Depends entirely on your local conditions - if I donīt water mine every 24 they are wilting by 36.

Mine are in 6.5ltr square pots and need at least 1.5 litres of water to each pot every day, if I left them another 12/24 hours they would be wilting and even might loose some of the lower leaves if left to long before watering again, if the weather is dull and raining all day and night, then I can just about get away with watering every other day, but I don't like to stress them unnecessarily and still give them a little drink even on wet days. On some very hot days and because my pots are standing on concrete I have to water them early morning and again in the evening.
