Afternoon all,
I have some tomatoes on the go (dont know what varieties they are as I cant find the seed packet anymore. I have been reading abot care for tomatoes and there was one thing that I found confusing so if someone could explain it would be great.
I read that you are meant to only let the main branch grow and prune all the others back but I could not work out what this means or which branch to prune?
feeling confused

Mate,
It all depends on the variety and type of Tomato plant it is, some bush types don't need any thining but tall outdoor types need to have a little bit of attention to get the best out of them, are you sure you can't remember the name? and where/how you growing them.

Hi jom,
they are being grown in grow bags, on the patio...they dont really look like bush tomatoes, they have a main central stem with branches/leaves comming out, I'll try and take some pics either tonight or tomorrow to show people.
cheers

think it means to prune any shoots that grow from in-between stem and branch

as bart said , nip out all side branches just leaving the main stem and grow tip , you should then produce flowers every internode that comes out the main stem .
ive got 5 or 6 diff veriaties and there all growing the same way
you use this way also for cucumbers , (and apparently melons) but only if there self fertile . plants with male /female flowers apparently you pinch the grow tip out instead

If they arent bush type , you may also need a bit of support . You can use string tied up above where theyre growing , tie it to the bottom of the plant and carefully twist as they grow up . This helps them to remain upright .
Also when you have 4 or 5 or 6 trusses set , pick out the growing tip . This'll allow them to fattenup nice.
Peace
