Full Version: 3 strains in one hydro bed, will it work or just stupid?

Hi guys,

Was hoping you could help me with some advice. Got a small NFT kit, big enough for 3 plants. This is my first go at hydro so Im keeping it small. I have several feminised seeds, some of which I want to grow using this NFT kit, my problem is that they are all different strains. The ones Im looking to use are Diesel, Super Skunk and White Widow. Is it possible to do this or am I just being stupid putting different strains in the same system?

Any help much appreciated

It'll work fine matey - one might grow a bit faster than the others, but you'll be able to sort that out.. cool.gif

Excellent, cheers mate. That means I can start germinating without worrying about wasting seeds. They all seem to have roughly the same flowering time so should be cool.

Thanks for the info cool.gif

You can grow 3 different strains in one tank but it's not wise. They'll all have different nutrient strength needs, different growth patterns, different hieghts and different finishing times. If its your first time in nft then, imo forget it, it'll be a nightmare and put you off nft for life; your best off with cuttings. If you want to grow 3 sorts together then pots would be better.

Hi,
Yeh, as the others said - it will work fine, but Its prob best to do 3 all the same, per use. Simply to make life easier for yourself, as diff strains will have different nutrient needs and different growth patterns (height etc) - eg I once did a mixed AK (mostly sativa) and Chronic (mixed) grow and the AKs were easily a ft taller when finished (despite them all being flowered small. They all kept pace height wise for a good while - then the AKs just took off).

If you do it, consider topping the tallest plants shortly before flower, to try and equalise the heights.

Thanks again BudFan, you keep popping up and helping me out.

Topping isnt a problem so will see how they are doing when flowering comes and take it from there. All the strains Iam going to be using in the NFT are 8 weeks. Have decided to put the diesel and blue venom in pots, much easier for them to be on their own. The ones in the NFT arent really the most difficult to grow so Im hoping I will get decent results with sticking to the feeding schedule for aqua flakes. Just have to wait and see.

Cheers again guys

Hey sircadogan,

So you've made your strain selection. Diesel is nice, ww nice and super skunk also very nice! biggrin.gif I understand that you want to have different strains growing. I did the samething on my first grow. Had ww and silver haze both growing in same hydro system. Was good to learn from and it didn't completely turn me off from hydro growing but left me wishing i had actually picked one strain instead of two. Growth patern can be managed and trained but i just thought that the different finishing times kinda screwed me up. the ssh was done in 9 weeks which was expected and thought the ww would be done as well. I was wrong, ww needed 10 weeks. I had started flushing during week 7 and the ww was left starving during week 9 and showed deep signs of deprevation, so i couldn't even leave them an additional week. While the ssh was very yummie and way done.
You will get smokeable buds at the end but I can tell you now that growing in hydro is best done with cuttings from one mother or strain... Not one of your options atm as i understand.
Just try to fix a finishing date around 9 weeks of flowering, which should be safe bet.

Good luck on your grow,

ps: hope you got ec meter and ph meter!

Thanks for the advice AustrianTokker.

It has been taken on board and will be put into practice I can get clones but not any time in the near future, so i'll give it a bash and see what happens.

I've got absolutely everything I need, down to an air pump and stone for any roots hanging down. PH I understand fine but truth be told the whole EC thing kind of confuses me. The schedule I have tells me how much to feed and what the EC should be. Iam presuming that the correct dosage of feed should create the desired EC, but as for what to do if it doesnt, well at that point im flummoxed. I've got the EC meter, and at £50 I better get some reading done so I can atleast understand it.

Thanks again for the advice
