"Marijuana and hemp are emerging from the shadows to greet the future in the Land of the Rising Sun.

Cannabis has been an integral part of Japanese culture since the beginnings of its history. Cannabis is a sacred herb to the religion of Shinto, and was also used and praised by ancient Zen poets and Buddhist monks.
Cannabis culture was suppressed and banned by US occupying forces after World War II, and today most Japanese don't realize that "marijuana" is the same plant as cannabis, which was once as much a part of Japanese culture as rice.

Yet now Japanese cannabis culture is making a comeback. Many Japanese youths have learned to enjoy marijuana while travelling overseas, while farmers and universities are researching and experimenting with industrial hemp. Activists and scholars are educating the Japanese people about cannabis' history and beneficial uses, and more Japanese are seeing the prohibition of cannabis as part of unwelcome American influence.

With the burgeoning growth of cannabis culture in Japan and around the world, perhaps Japan will lead Asia in shaking off prohibitionist dogma, and once again honouring cannabis as a sacred and beneficial plant."

Most Japanese farmers used to grow hemp (Asa - Japanese for hemp) on their land and many would grow Taima (weed) as well. This was all brought to a halt at the end of the second world war at the behest of the occupying powers. The only people allowed to continue growing weed were the Ainu up in Hokkaido. I remember my wife telling me about the Japanese equivalent of Johnny Morris, apparently he grows some pretty mean weed on his farm up there.

I know of one group of farmers on Shikoku that have been granted a license to grow hemp for Shinto ceremonies but don't know many details.

Would be really nice if Japan threw off the shackles imposed on them at the end of the last war by the occupying forces and embraced what was part of their culture yes.gif , would be even better if they could pass any laws necessary by early next year wink1.gif

It is no secret that weedy (uncultivated) hemp in Hokkaido is still psychoactive. Indeed, every year some people try to harvest it in the autumn and get caught by the police. Its potency has been described as "quite good". It descended from cannabis legally grown by Japanese farmers until the late 1940s. Hokkaido hemp is by no means the only kind of indigenous psychoactive cannabis found in Japan:

"A survey of the THC, CBN and CBD content of hemp from all parts of Japan was reported by Dr. Keizo Watanabe. Marihuana from Tochigi and Hokkaido regions contained a 3.9 per cent and 3.4 per cent THC, respectively."
