Most Japanese farmers used to grow hemp (Asa - Japanese for hemp) on their land and many would grow Taima (weed) as well. This was all brought to a halt at the end of the second world war at the behest of the occupying powers. The only people allowed to continue growing weed were the Ainu up in Hokkaido. I remember my wife telling me about the Japanese equivalent of Johnny Morris, apparently he grows some pretty mean weed on his farm up there.
I know of one group of farmers on Shikoku that have been granted a license to grow hemp for Shinto ceremonies but don't know many details.
Would be really nice if Japan threw off the shackles imposed on them at the end of the last war by the occupying forces and embraced what was part of their culture
