Ok - despite the failure to get a female in 2007 and the ripping in 2008, I am trying again this year.
Wanted one sat and one indy - and having not had the time, space, equipment for clones, I have gone for femmed seeds. Seems to be all the rage this year.
Passion #1 for the indy and Voodoo for the sat. Not heard anything about the Voodoo. Looks like a recent cross. Says that it has Thai parentage, so hopefully something with a bit of sativa sparkle.
Haven't got any spots yet, nor cracked the seeds even. But one thing I have learnt over the years is that there is plenty of time still. Of course I will daydream the next 4 weeks away, then there will suddenly not be plenty of time

Hmmm. You wanted one of each. That's not greedy, I hear you say.
So how many did you /do you start with, just to guarantee a crop?
Mine is 28 in germ, 16 seedlings, 2 runts leaves 14. Take away half the males, that's 7, lose, break, over-feed, slugs, rabbits to each of those leaves you 2.
Hopefully one of each!

Yeah it's different with fems a little. As long as 4 out of 5 crack I should be alright. I know what basic protection they need.

Of course double if femmed, etc.
Also add - if it's + one site + the LOST card can be a f**k of a Joker...
Even with 2 sites could lose you half.

Yes! Some news... of the 5 Passions, only 3 germinated. And the Voodoo were a complete washout

Very dissapointing.
Also I haven't yet got a site. Although I have identified an area which
should give a few options.
I might be lucky and get some cuts off a generous benefactor.

3rd time out I have been a bit more fortunate. Got a couple of holes dug - but it is in what is probably acidic soil - bracken and gorse around. Can I get some lime and dig it in, then plant?
treeofsatta
Jun 16 2009, 12:27 AM
Hey man, might wanna check that it won't burn the roots of your plants when it goes it. I thought lime was something you have to put in like 6 months before the plants but I'm not sure

I've read its at least 1 month before you should plant anything with lime conditioned soil? Dunno TBH!

Jun 16 2009, 06:39 AM
Maybe dig a bigger hole, treat the soil in the bottom and sides with lime ,and fill the rest with quality compost.Hopfully the time the roots get through the compost the surrounding soil will be safe for them, dont no could work.
Gom Jibbar
Jun 16 2009, 08:32 PM
Yeah I think I am going to expand the holes, fill with compost and top dress the mud around the compost with lime. Taking a look at a few alotment message boards, it seems that light top dressing around plants is ok as long as you don't go too close to the stems. The worst I can do is fail miserably - and seeing as that's what I do every year, I am only flying straight and level.

From the back of my Lime packet
"Garden lime can be applied at
any time of year but is best applied the autumn before the first frosts. for normal soils use every 3rd year, Acidic soils may need annual applications. scatter 100-200 grms per sq m (3-6 oz per sq yd) fork in well.
I wouldnt lime if youve got very young seedlings with small roots, but otherwise youll be fine.

Couldn't find any lime at the local DIY/garden place - there is a better one I will try out of town.
Put two out this afternoon in site 1. Both Passion #1's. I went and dug up two more holes at site 2. Not in such a good place though - but never mind. I have 4 more to go out. 1 more Passion and 3 which are either anesthesia or purple wreck - not really outdoor specialists, but you never know.
I will put two in site 2, and try and find a place for site 3. I think I have an idea where I will put them.

Ok - 3 sites each with 2 plants all set.
Site A - 2 Passion #1s. Nice southerly aspect. Lots of bracken about, rabbits and deer.
Site B - 2 Anesthesias. Nice soil, fairly overshadowed. Big badger's set nearby.
Site B - 1 Purple Wreck and 1 Passion #1. In a pine forest. Loads of deer!
As ever, I am not confident that I'll get anything from this year. Oh for a decent site! One that you could GUARANTEE that no other bugger would go.

Sorry this diary isn't very exciting. I am too cautious to take photos - and to be fair, the photos wouldn't be very exciting.
Site A is looking a bit so-so. One of plants has a large trail in the bracken towards it - either a person or deer. Either way it's not good.
Site B - one of the two plants didn't take. The other one is ok - but still very small.
Site C - looking about the best. Growth rates have been poor - but hopefully something will go.

I think 2009 is going to be as good as the last two years alas.

Oct 1 2009, 08:11 PM
A little update. I really WAS going to get some photos this time - but forgot to take the camera.
I actually wasn't expecting anything at all apart from bitten down stalks. Suprisingly - despite leaving them for a whole month, they have taken advantage of the good weather and done a little bit of developing.
Site A - 2 Passion #1s. Nice southerly aspect. Lots of bracken about, rabbits and deer - now two very small plants each with a little crown bud on top
Site B - 2 Anesthesias. Nice soil, fairly overshadowed. Big badger's set nearby - one tiny plant that wasn't doing anything. I pulled it up and brought it home. I reckon maybe 1gm dry weight. Just so I can say I have harvested some bud!
Site C - 1 Purple Wreck and 1 Passion #1. In a pine forest. Loads of deer - This one was the biggest suprises. The PW is a nice neat little plant with purple buds and frosty leaves! The passion has a little crown bud.
All plants could do with 2 more weeks. Aargh! When I thought there was nothing I wasn't worried. Now I am so close to getting a harvest I have evil cruel hope to torment me. Now I will dream of harvesting my little 20gm crop and some fucking deer will come along and eat it! Or it will be rotten by mid-Oct
Maybe it's my punishment for not posting pics...

This week's update is a bit more positive. And as promised I have pics!
Here is the star of the show. She's only small, and she ideally has a couple of weeks' to go. But she's pretty and smells amazing. Like candied fruit. Very resinous too.
Click to view attachmentClick to view attachmentShe's no whopper, but she's mine, so I have to love her. I've seen this strain grown indoors, and it's much stronger smelling and more purple outdoors. I couldn't see any rot. But fingers are very much crossed. In an ideal world it would be better fed and given 3 more weeks. In this workaday world, I don't know if that's going to be possible.

You can see the buds a little better on this one:
Click to view attachmentNext to this PW was a small and scraggy passion. a couple of raggy buds and yellow leaves that weren't going anywhere so I pulled it up. It'll be an evening's smoke at some stage. Not worth a pic though.
On the other site there were 2 passions. Both tiny little things. This is the one that I left. It needs another week or so:

The other Passion was much more exposed and had consequently finished quicker. Siting makes a big difference.
The leaves had all gone yellow and the two wee little buds were firm, resinous and nice smelling. I chopped them and added them to the other little Passion bud. They are hanging out to dry and should weigh about an 8th! Yeah it's not much - but compared to the miserable results I have had for the past 2 years it feels like progress!

All chopped and brought home!
One small Passion, and one small-medium Purple Wreck. The Passion was ready to come in. The PW could have done with one week of full hot sunshine.. which is exactly what it wouldn't have got. 3 days of drizzle and rain forecast and I have to be away for a week. Signs of wilting here and there, plus slugs, mushrooms, etc. So I cut and ran.
Nice to get them all in and clear up the sites. Left nothing behind but a few fan leaves
Here's a close up of a PW bud untrimmed. Fantastically sticky and stinky. Looking forward to this.
Click to view attachmentAnd here are all of today's plants trimmed and ready to hang and dry. Perhaps another few grammes of Passion and maybe just over a quarter of PW:
Click to view attachmentThis is the dried Passion from last week. It smells great. Pine, lemon and and woody, sagey hint too. Haven't smoked any yet.
Click to view attachmentI also got a good bag of very sticky trim which I will make butter and fudge with.
So 2009 season is over for me. It's been significantly better than the last two years! I have to thank the good Duck for all his help and support this year. One year I will really bring it in! My sites were reasonable this year in terms of stealth, but fairly poor in terms of sun/deer protection/soil. What I have definately learned is that stealth is the first consideration. 5 nibbled plants with mediocre sun and poor soil still brought in something. Next year I will make more effort on sites. Any would be guerilllas out there, remember: Location, location, location.
Good luck all of you. If you haven't brought any in yet, then fingers crossed. If you have - then happy smoking. And a special mention goes out to anyone who's been ripped, rotted or ruined. I know how it feels - keep the faith and keep it green

Im back out looking for sites, and im looking for places were people would just have no reason to go. Hard to get to is good but its worth just tuckin a single plant here and there in easier to access sites just off the beaten track. (hope this makes sense) Soil prep is definatley necessary but im going for dig, compost and plant all in one visit next year. Rabit protection just aint worth compromising on its the least you can do for your plants. And sun holes can be cut into the cannopy of most sites. Next year will be you year GOM!

Nice results, next year will be great. Have fun with the biscuits, remember, just put the trim [inc. stalks] in a large pot with 80% water and 20% unsalted butter. After 45mins of gentle simmering and stirring, strain the lot into a fridge friendly plastic container, and leave overnight. Poke a hole in the top of the butter, and drain out the water. Viola! perfect butter for your flapjack. Eating is better for health, and less expensive than making hash. Plus, it's nice to be high all day. Just remember to get the dose just right. My knowledge is just trial and error.

Thanks peeps

The Passion hardly shrank when dried but the Purple Wreck dried down to hardly anything! No bother though. Still happy about it.
Stickybud - I usually mix butter and water and do it that way. This time I decided to just melt it straight in the butter and stir it for ages. Seemed to work just as well, and without all the faffing about with separating the water and fat.
Wakenbaker - yeah I am already scouting. I won't use the same sites as this year - but will be within the same 10 miles or so.
