I'm boring, I just got the standard blue background with no shortcuts, just my computer & the recycle bin. Someone told me once that a fancy desktop pic and shortcuts use up memory, dunno if that's true but I've always had nowt on there just in case.
Nah mate, Regardless of what image you use on your desktop it will not use more memory, the only additional memory you would use is saving the images onto your computer before assigning them to your desktop (and even then each image you save to your computer uses a teeny-weeny slither of memory.) And as for desktop shortcuts, they use probably the smallest fraction of memory physically possible, They're totally fine to have and do not cause any slow downs.
Best way I find to trawl for images is to do a google search as you normally would when browsing i.e ''fat buds'' then on the google results page click the 'images' tab at the far left hand side at the top of the page and it will bring up lots of images of fat buds! Right click on whatever image catches your eye and select 'save picture as', give it a name, and save, (should automatically save into your picture folder but if not then fire it into your 'pictures' folder) then go to control panel>personalise>desktop background>browse, into your pictures folder and bosh!

(there's absolutely no risk of getting any virus saving images onto your computer using this method)
E2A: I currently use Windows Vista, for XP systems the procedure for accessing your desktop background settings will likely be very similer but may have minor differences.
I know you weren't directly asking how to customize your desktop background but hey... fuck it, Im outta weed and restless, aint gonna sleep tonight so I got a helluva lot of time on my hands!
