Nope - doesn't work like that - if your copy is designated as 'not genuine', it will still work (as Win ever does

) but it will only let you install essential security patches from then on. (and not non-essential things like the latest version of Media Player/DirectX etc., although there's nothing stopping you from downloading those things from elsewhere)
