OK, I'm considering buying a new console, and due to my abject skintness and my unashamed love of Nintendo, it's either gonna be a Wii or a DS. The DS appeals cos the DS version of mario kart is superb, the DS Zelda is great and the relatively new GTA - Chinatown Wars is exceptionally impressive (IMHO it's a far better game than GTA IV). But the Wii appeals too, Super Mario Galaxy is an astonishingly good game and Super Smash Bros Brawl is just one of the most insanely fun games ever made, and I think I'd prefer a console to a handheld. But I've only ever played the Wii on a posh big screen telly. But I've only got a small portable TV, and I'm wondering does that in any way affect the Wii controller, does it work as well on a teeny tiny TV ?

Cheers.

(and please, no "Get an Xbox360/PS3" posts thanks, if I wanted either I wouldn't have started the thread)

wii is not all that more a gimmick

Hi Boojum, the DS would be good if you had a lot of travelling to do, especially on trains, etc, my son loves his, but he wants a Wii now too, which, since you posted this thread, prompted me to have a wee (no pun intended) look on ebay (sorry if that's spam), but it seems you can pick a Wii up for less than a DS (going by the average price of the DS and lowest prices of the Wii). Problem is though, with ebay there's usually no warranty and you have to make sure you get everything you need along with it, otherwise you could just end up with the console itself and possibly be out more than it was worth new buying the necessary accessories. There's cex in the high street of course, although they've only slightly undercut the retail price of a new one as far as I can see, but you do get a year's warranty with it (as far as I know). Check the local papers though, often get a bargain there, plus if you buy it locally you can always take it back should it be faulty. Caveat emptor and all that. smile.gif

Aye, if I get a Wii it'll be a second hand one either from an ad in the Friday Ad (Brighton local paper) or cash converters (Game/Gamestation etc 'pre-owned' stuff is a diabolical ripoff), but making sure it's kosher first. A DS it'll be new, cos I wouldn't trust a secondhand one, what with the touch screen etc (at least with a second hand Wii the suspect bit will be the controller, which can be replaced). Can't use Ebay cos I don't have a credit/debit card, but even if I did I'm not sure I'd trust it for a console, you got little comeback if it dies on you. Kinda another reason I'm not that interested in the Xbox360, read so much about the problems with them I wouldn't risk a secondhand one and don't really wanna fork out the dosh for a new one, can't afford it. And a PS3 is totally out of the question even if I wanted one, cos they're just silly money (not to mention the power they use, would probably double my electricity bill lol.gif and not much use having a hi-def console if you've only got a low-def telly).

I hate computers, I hate gaming, I dislike technology ...
But me and Mrs L just love our Wii.
We play nine holes of golf just about every night before bed; that, or tennis.
The yoga's good too. It has helped me hugely, in ways I never felt posible. It has helped me control my breathing (which is sometimes difficult due to angina), and to work on my balance (I have a duff metal knee which makes me very unbalanced physically).
All in all, a winner for us.
The DS always looks small to me. The small games thingies are beyond my digital abilities though.

I love the idea of Arnie & Mrs Arnie playing the Wii

biggrin.gif

Honestly man, that's made me reet grin. Hope that don't sound wrong, I love that you enjoy it - that's what gaming is all about. It's a FUN console, and to me that's what it's all about - FUN smile.gif

My kids (and me wink.gif ) have both the DS and the Wii. Love them both, but the DS combined with a R4 card (SDHC takes up to 8gb mini SD card) is really great, my youngest girls has 166 games on her DS on the one card!!! Never getting bored again!!

I own an xbox 360, wii and a ds. I only got the wii for "party games" when mates come over. Mario Kart was a favourite for a while but now the wii just sits under my tv gathering dust, i havnt used it for months now. Infact since getting tiger woods 2009 on the xbox that gets the most usage when my mates come over, great fun. Ive only played the wii on my 50 inch tv, i cant see it being as much fun on a portable. Personally i'd go for the DS, as mentioned above, get yourself an R4, download the games from bit torrent and you'll be sorted for life. Ive got over 200 games on my pc, i can fit about 45 games on my sd card but if you go for an 8gb sd card you'll get hundreds on your card.

Go for the DS.

I sort of disagree, the Wii and DS are different animals, I don't see how you can compare the two really, some folks like one some folks like the other, it really depends on what sort of gaming and games you enjoy. The real answer is that you have to have both and let yourself gravitate naturally to one or the other. Buy 2nd hand and sell second hand and it costs you nothing to try them both out.

I personally don't like either much, nothing matches the PC for gaming capability, all consoles are dumbed down and neutered apologies of the genuine article. I only wish I could afford to keep up with the hardware demands of PC games but I can't so I'm going to cut my losses and buy an Xbox360 instead of the new mobo/cpu/gfx card combo next time.

To answer an original question, does the Wiimote work OK on a small TV? Yes it does.

The 'input' for the wii controller is the light bar above the tv, so you're not pointing at the screen, rather a 'place in space' infront of your tv. Size won't overly effect it, tbh. You won't be making smaller movements with your arms if you have a small tv. Likewise, you won't have to make huge motions if you were playing with a projector.

Hi Boojum

Id say go for a Ds, Ive got a ps3, my misses and daughter have a DS each and i got them a wii for crimbo. even though i dont get the time to play on any of them that much (coz im on here) wink.gif

Its the ps3 for me but we bought the Ds first a few years ago and still love playin them, the portability is great and battery life lasts along time. you can surf the net with it and online gaming is good as well.

the wii is good fun but I have a big TV and dont think it will be to good on a small one, what I found annoying with the wii was that the remotes need battery so i had to buy rechargeable ones and I had to pay for a download to surf the internet, I think these thing should come as standard on new consoles. just my 2p worth hope it helps cool.gif

peace

Booj - horses for courses - get a Wii - it should work - just saw post from user on site saying it does on their old portable.

I have had a 360 - puts out more heat than 400w HPS rolleyes.gif

I have a PS3, PSX (chipped), XBox ans the wife has a DS and a Wii. The Wii is a great console - as a Nintendo fan you won't be dissapointed. Wii Fit and Sports are good as is playing the old Donkey Konga (with the bongo drums).
'Boogie' turns it into a Karoke machine - complete with microphone and if you like your puzzles then an old game (for Wii) is Koororinpa which is ace.

Greetings Booj,

Get yourself a Wii man wink1.gif. I'm a PS3 lover, but Mrs Buff loves her Wii, and her DS. In fact TBH, I occasionally get the Wii board out, and have a play on the snow-boarding whistling.gif Ssssh, don't tell anyone!

The only thing I find hard on the Wii, is that it can make my back really ache after playing a few strenuos games. Other than that, there's no real reason to knock it, as it really is different strokes for different folks wink.gif. Wii games are much more family oriented, and there is a decent selection of games out there. Mrs Buff particulary likes her Wii fit, and loves Raving Rabbits rofl.gif

Peace and one love

Aye, there's more to the Wii than "Mario". Personaly, I can't abide the moustachioed little fekker. And the games are far too complicated for me.
But the yoga - man, that's really good if you're in poor shape. Buffs, I recommend it to you my man, it'll do that back the power of good. I've managed to get my balance from way-off to damn near perfect in 3 weeks! Can't hold it for long, but what-the-hey, its a gain!
The breathing exercises are great too, especially for those of us with Angina and other cardio-type probs.
The snow sports will do your back every time, though Buffalao. Correcting your balance with the yoga trainer will help you enjoy the snow-boarding better and without so much pain too.
I wait to see you going downhill like the best! Is it a bird, is it a plane? No! Its Bufallo on his snowboard, can't you smell the bud as he passes? Whoooossshhh!

Must go do my Wii, now!

Now that's got to be worth trying thumbsup.gif will let you know this evening whether it works or not Keye. You can also have a run with the Bobsleigh and Skeleton but I haven't got to grips with that one yet. Haven't really had much time to dip into many of the games on the new Winter Sports disk but they do look fun, I've always wanted to have a go at curling but our local canal doesn't freeze over often and the shopping trolleys would probably get in the way, so it's a good opportunity to have a go yes.gif

To my chagrin Mon General, I have yet to even look at the Wii Fit. Mrs Buff is a regular user though. However, I will have a go on the yoga wink.gif
