I bought 6 strawberry plants from ALDI's on tuesday, they all came in little pots and I re-potted them yesterday, I know nothing about growing anything although I knew these were rootbound, hungry and thirsty, I have re-potted them but need more advice,
I have 3 varietys early, mid and late 2 of each, I want to keep them inside because the dog has all ready tried to destroy them, I have not mixed them with my canna plants yet as I want to make sure they are pest free,Click to view attachment
These flowers are going to produce fruits unsure.gif but should I cut them and leave them to grow or leave them to produce fruit?
I have searched but not found the answers yet!

The label says I should plant them 25cms apart, Does that mean I need 25cm's pots?
How long till I see fruit?
Biobizz bloom?
Also the label says 8 hours of sunlight, can I put them on 18/6? with my canna?
Any help is much appreciated, thank you.

I have early, mid and late varietys and although i have never grown strawberries before, I do believe these flowers will go on to produce fruit, unsure.gif but maybe I should cut them back and wait till next year for a bigger crop, I really don't know unsure.gif

It is only two plants ( the early ones, that have started fruiting)

We've got some 'elan' strawbs that we bought a couple of months ago as plugs , not sure if they're early or late ones though.
they went into 1 ltr then 2ltr pots under 2ft flouro tubes in the lounge on a 20/4 cycle. doh.gif
the feckers flowered a couple of weeks ago eek.gif so Mrs.S played bumbly bee with a paintbrush and i stuck 'em under a 250 hps with my canna.
2 of the 3 have a couple of developing fruits already yahoo.gif so when there's some more they'll go down a level under the 400watter
probably have to get a few more for outside and they'll get fed the leftovers from when i make too much bloom mix up for my pot.

Nice. thumbsup.gif What strawberry plant have you got there? I'v got some alpine strawberries to grow. Do they grow well straight out of the pot? (Opposed to needing supports etc.)

alpine straws are tiny , and in the wild form a kind of mat / ground cover.
you shouldn't need suports.

I bought a strawberry plant yesterday from my garden center, I saw them in big queues for £6 !!! and I payed £1 dont know much about them but will find out, I got them outside, they will throw out runners that need pegging down and they will develop into a new plant also they will need feeding when they start flowering. (what my mum says anyway)

Strawberry plants have a 3 year cycle…. the first year you get a small crop…the second year you get a large crop, and possibly the third year, but after three years, they lose their oomph….
so you need to replace your plants, and to take runners during the first year to make sure you have a second year crop all the time. When strawberries are growing well,
they throw out tendrils, which grow miniature plants on the end, and they are the runners. When they get to a size of 3 or 4 leaves, then cut off the runner, and plant it in a pot of good multi-purpose compost, and keep well-watered.
When you take the runners in the first year, do not let the runner plant crop. Just let it sit, and produce leaves. They are called maiden plants….
if flowers look like opening, take them off. Don't forget to label and date your runners. Remove surplus runners, and make sure you keep your plants well weeded if growing them in the ground. When watering, do not wet the fruits, as they will develop botrytis, so use a watering can, and gently water near the crowns. Do not use a hosepipe, as it will spray the fruits, and disease will follow.

Hey Potstinkus I bought the same pack of strawberries from Aldi, I just got the early one. I think they were £2.99, which looks like a good price compared to what I've seen elsewhere. I'm growing outdoors in pots as there's not much bed space left and lots of room on the patio. Also don't really know what I'm doing but have popped them in to some John Innes no.2 with some rock dust and root grow and watered in with seaweed extract. They've been in a week or two and have been producing new leaves and look like they are starting to develp flowers already.

Thanks very much Sensistar, that is an important lesson learned already biggrin.gif , I will watch out for the runners later in the year. Will the plants set down runners ok even if they are in fairly small pots, I think they're 5l, they are about 30-4cm diameter with two plants per pot? Do you know if the runner plants need to be overwintered in a greenhouse?

I should have posted this sooner ..

I been getting loads of strawberry plants on flea bay from a few different folk, been getting seeds too which are cheap as chips for a 100 or so

Think I been pay around 6 quid for 3 or 4 Strawberry plugs, planted them all up and some are starting to flower.

EDIT - Also been getting raspberry canes and goji berry plants on flea bay quite cheap too

I grow Cambridge Favourite strawberries - in large pots. Once the runners have a mini plant on the end I put it into a small pot - with the runner still attached(you can hide the little pots amongst the leaves - and roots will grow. Once rooted and growing well, cut the plant free from the runner. Don't let strawberries sit on damp soil - they will rot - which is why many people lay straw on top of the soil

The biggest problem for strawberries is the Vine Weevil - which lays eggs throughout summer into the soil. These turn into brown headed maggots that will eat all the roots of your plants.

Good advice SL, thanks for the tips. I already hvae a couple of runners on one of my plants now so will try and root them in small pots, cut free and then stick into plastic greenhouse for a couple of weeks to establish I reckon.

Any advice on Vine Weevil prevention and control?

I don't know anything about strawberries, thats kinda why I started this thread, but mine have started to produce runners(confirmed by my mother wink.gif ), also outside cause I was worried about pests, got fruit now and it's starting to turn red, just wait and see I guess?, would like to plant more berries(tayberries perhaps) but don't have much space in the garden, have tried tayberries before but never had any luck with it sad.gif , I will take some more pics soon and post results wink.gif

For edible plants the only control for weevils are nematodes that you water into the soil

I always tidy the plants up and repot in late winter/early spring and hand pick out any that survive (birds eat them). Fresh pot, fresh earth - go again.

I leave mine out all year. They are hardy.

Cheers for starting this thread Pots I've learnt a lot.

Thanks again SL, don't think I will worry about nematodes, too pricy for me. Will definitely freshen them up next year if all goes well this summer.
