Soo what fish are you hunting down this year? Whats your goal?
Mine is to catch one of the fish in a secret like. I think the size is around 36lb and its a common. This water is awesome shallow, clear and no fishing soo no one else fishing there :]

Doing a bit of guesting are we.........

.I used to love guesting a little nature reserve near me had plenty of cracking fish out of there aswell not the biggest of Carp but High 20's.But they was some of the best looking fish and that was enough to go after them, you could tell they had'nt been caught much if ever..........

Snotties will be the death of me......Ive had 5 carpin seesion so far this year and every fecking one ive blanked with Carp but ended up with at least 5/6 Snotties not bad sizes 6/8lb its just no fun on Carping gear you just tow them in.......Light tackle and it would great fun.I think they've took a liking to my Spod/Baiting up mix.
There's quite a few doubles been pulled out the Pit im on, I think 13lb something got caught last year, again though with Carping tackle its no fun....

I'd love a 3lb perch, but mostly I'd love to catch a 2lb river roach by design and on the float.
This closed season I'm going to fish a few silver fish matches, so Im gonna have my 'coarse fishing' head on for a while.
Come June I will be tenching on a local pit and mate has invited me to fish Belnheim palace with him on the 23rd so ahve that to look forward to, too.
I plan to fish other rivers for barbel this year, as it has to be said that the OUse barbs are few and far between. Saying that though, every barbeller I speak to says there particular briver is oon the decline in terms of barbel fishing, except for perhaps the Wye and Teme.
Tight lines and good luck to all those out for the last few days of the season.

for me as a fluff chucker .. I'm looking to catch a bar of silver on a certain little river in west cork .... my best last season was 18 pounds 4 oz ...caught about 10.30 at night (dusk)with a hairymary (single barbless)
she was a beautiful iridescent blue on a silver body covered in sea lice ... fresh on the tide ...
And when im not on a river I like to surf fish for bass
tight lines to you all and may all your fish be the fish of your dreams

Yes! Lots. I've caught on surface poppers, always at dawn....
During the daylight hours live sandeel is my method of choice estuary mouths.....live joeys also do the trick on rocky shores, peeler further up the estuaries....
Lots and lots of places...Should be starting to warm up by the middle of April, mackerel will be close inshore and the sandeels in the estuaries.....TBH there ARE bass about all year down here, but not prolific during winter.
PM me where you are, are you new to West Country?

Good Luck with it....

Are Plaice a species particularly attracted to sparkly bling above the hook? Still got those snoods you sent, so i'll use those tomorra

Still a bit dirty here atm, but no wind so might have cleared lots come high water tomorra lunch.
Mono
Mar 14 2009, 07:47 PM
Those snoods I sent ya before more for pollack, whiting, macks...gurnard even....
I've just tied up some plaice traces....
You want them long, so the bait can flutter, LOTS of beads, I mean a dozen big beads or more, sequins, a flounder spoon ahead of the bling too...might try and take some pics....As well as all the beads I put a small drilled bullet lead (eigthth ounce or so) as the final bead above the ghook, to keep the bait hard on the sea bed....
Ragworm and long squid strip is classic plaice bait, I had a couple last year on frozen black lug and scallop frill instead of the squid......
I tend to do EITHER alternate green and black beads, or alternate orange and red, or orange and yellow beads....You really can't have too much bling for flounder or plaice, they love it...
Will put the bass off though, so I fish a rod fully blinged up, and a rod with plain snood....plaice and bass often come into same sort of areas....
Good Luck tomorrow Bish....

Cheers for the tips

I've gotta get bait, so will see if they've got those small drilled bullet leads
Bish
Mar 14 2009, 08:04 PM
Like this innit, but with bullet leads above the hook? Is that lead free moving same as the beads?
Mono
Mar 14 2009, 10:07 PM
Yes, free moving bullet...
I tend to just use the one snood though....
But that looks kewl....might even try it meself...
Thanks Bish!

First plaice of the year....
Very skinny, not long spawned...
Thought it was a round a ..pound, but only 360grams, will do for lunch....
they should be fattening up a bit by next month..

Mar 16 2009, 05:39 PM
Rig? Bait? Hook size?

Mar 16 2009, 07:06 PM
Simple running leger, loads of beads (alternate black and green, my personal faves, but not sure it matters), sequins between beads, and flashing silver blade on top of beads....size 1 hook, would be a sakuma.....king rag and squid strip....
Ate it grilled for lunch, really tasty.....
They'll be fattening up now, and more prolific into april....I bought a couple off a fisherman last week he'd caught on some offshore banks, they a fair bit fatter.....
Good luck on the plaice hunt bish...

My main goal this year is to catch my first ever Barbel... I have wanted to have a go for these beautiful fish for a long long time but I don't have my own transport and the nearest decent river is quite a way from where I live...
My Bro in Law, who is quite the Barbel expert, has promised he will take me out next time I'm down in Wilts where they live... will have to get planning for the summer methinks!
also would like to catch my first 30lb Carp... shouldn't have to travel too far for that, just keep chipping away!

Thirty plus for me please....and from somewhere that isnt like Bluebell or Linear....somewhere relatively unfished....
Spent near on a 40 weekends one year, fishing a place called Pebley Res in Sheffield...NIGHTMARE! The only carp i hooked into snagged me up in seconds and even with wading into the trees and unravelling half my line from underwater I couldnt get that bugger out. Other than that some cracking tench....6-9lb, didnt see one smaller.
Hard water but nice to do some proper hunting....just a good job I wasnt relying on it for food!!!
Somewhere in between screamers every 10 mins and feeling like carp are jumping onto the mat for a photo....and some where that has more than 30 fish in 27 acres (no joke) !!!
Peace
