Just popped into a well known mobile phone shop, the phone and contract I liked actually comes with a free Xbox360 Elite!

If I was to get it, I'd be using it on our old 32" CRT Sony, it's flat and wide screen, but not HD compatible. What exactly is great about an elite, apart from the huge hard drive and the fact that its black? I actually would be very happy with a standard 20gb or even a core 360, the tv and cabinet are silver anyway.

What is so good about an elite? Would I be better off negotiating a PS3 instead?

the only difference is it has the larger h/d, is black and has HD capability. you can still use on normal tv, I use mine on a 32" Panasonic CRT and is fine - better games than the PS3 too

I believe the elite also has HDMI output but the standard has the pc type output.

Yep its got a HDMi output that'll be handy if you ever get a hd telly, also its less prone to the RROD than the older models.

I have an elite. The two things is the HDMI output (as mentioned) and it has a large hard drive which is nice if you want to do anything like use it for a media center or storing video clips of your game action. I also have a crt but do plan to get a HD flat screen at some point.

First of all PS3 is shit until they can utilise it's full potential.

Second, I did the exact same thing a few years ago. I got a contract phone deal with free xbox. Then I needed to get a plasma screen to get the full potential I was missing. The phone wasn't good compared to the other contracts I had without the free stuff too. A lower quality built phone. Ended up costing me like 1400 over a couple months that phone contract

Killed the xbox over a couple years and enjoyed that though. Looked good in HD.

playstation are fucked, they still arnt making any profit on them (thats why theres been no big price drop yet) however there are talks of an april price drop but if they already arnt making any money, then they gonna be making even less come april, whereas microsoft are reporting huge profits in the xbox department and will match any price drop playstation do

Hopefully companies like Sony will wise up and start treating their computer programers and gaming design studios with more respect and dignity.

IMHO the respect and dignity (no matter how much of it is delt out) will do little if anything whilst trying to compete with multi billionairre Bill Gates and Microsoft. Fair enough it might make the staff at Sony feel better about themselves, but it terms of being an effective tool to help them conquer the gaming market, I think not.
It is a shame that the whole computer and gaming scene is monopolized in such a way.

No wonder the xbox is doing so well, most people i know who've had them are on their 3rd one (why they just don't buy the elite version i don't know)
The Ps3 just can't compete at the moment, mainly due to it's big price and lack of titles but i think as they start utilising the potential we'll see some super games coming.

get the elite, download your games onto hard drive and there is no disc noise at all during playing
the games load very fast when put on your hard drive aswell, tis a great addition to the 360 dashboard

You can, you still need the disc in the console though.

To the op: what you really need is a hdtv for it, or monitor. The difference is like night and day. I have a ps3 also, if you want to play games at the moment the 360 is better. not all 360's are that noisey, i have one that is loud as hell but the other is quieter than my ps3, they have different dvd drives in them, one is a sammy and the other is a liteon.

Getting an elite does not protect against the red ring of death. mates elite got the RROD less than a year after he got it.

He was gutted as he thought it wasn`t likely to happen but did.

I would still get an xbox though, im on my 2nd, the bigger harddrive is good for putting music and photo`s onto then your photos which can be veiwed on your tv.

They have also brought out a photo party thing, get your mates online and you can all see the same slide show of photo`s as you`s talk over the head set.

My Xbox 20gb the white one has HDMI.

The old ones didnt but now all xbox have HDMI.

And you can link it to the comp to play music watch films view photos.

You need to click shareing on in media center then an extender for the xbox.

Elite it is then! If nothing else, I could sell it still in the box and prob get £200 or thereabouts, but we'll see. My missus moans about me caning my old ps2, it's ridiculous! It took me a month to finish 24, cos of her clinginess...I do love playing simpsons hit and run with the kids though, never get tired of that.

same here, its a complete myth that the elites are any better inside than any other 360, your just as likely to get red ring (in fact thinking on it all my mates that have had red ring lately have had elites)
i remember when elites first come out, somebody on another xbox forum ripped one open on release day and found it was exactly the same as a core made at the same time - even though the microsoft boys had been hinting that it was gonna be all improved and red ring proof etc etc
basically what they didnt say was apart from the hard-drive and the colour of the console, the upgrades that they did do (hdmi slot etc) were gonna be fitted across the whole range anyway, when they were dropping hints about the elite

tbh though im glad i didnt get an elite, im buying a 120gb hard drive soon but the finish of it (that shade of black on cheap looking plastic) is ugly - it looks like an old mark2 fiesta dashboard, i prefer my white one - it matches my sky box better

although i appreciate sometimes its not possible but, get it on full 1080p if you can, its criminal not too! i played on a Panny CRT fro the first 6 months then got a new HD panny and the difference was unreal.

Pity we do what we do and cant share gamertags so lets just all agree that i would win on a COD4/5 mashup

I really need to get a wireless adaptor for mine, not that id kick your arses, i wouldn't, it took me over a week to complete cod4, which is about a week to long apparently!! would be a laugh though. why would you put a game on your harddrive though if you still need to have the disc, whats the benefits?? sounds like a waste of time to me.
my 20gb has hdmi also, and gears of war2 on a 50" plasma, was just magnificent!!

SF4 is the shit

It has HDMI output, which means its proper HD, when normal 360 isn't! PS3 rules... but you can hack the 360 piece of piss, just new firmware on disc drive and your playing copied games! (can't use online then!!).

firstly the 360 does have hdmi output (all 360s do) and is 'proper hd' and secondly ive got my 360 modded and play online with the games all the time - as long as they are stealthed right and you dont play them before release its fine

The inside workings of the elite seem to be the same. You might get a different drive but I doubt it. The red ring is caused by the cpu coming loose from the plate I believe. Like where they clip the chip to the board. The chip comes away because the clips are shit, which they never fixed with the elite (which leads me to believe they never really improved anything for the elite) It seems to be a repackage of the existing technology. Personally, I couldn't see any difference between elite and normal xbox apart from the colour.

I recently bought a second hand game for a few quid, it had really long loading times so i thought i'd burn it to the hard drive just to try it. The loading times are alot faster and the xbox is silent when playing which makes a nice change. As mentioned earlier you do sill need the disc in although it dosnt run from the disc, i think the reason for this is to stop you from buying a game, burning it to your hard drive then trading it it but still playing the game from your hd.


'Proper HD' WTF?



All 360's dont have hdmi output. Mine dosnt. It runs in HD but not through HDMI output, it runs through the PC connection on my tv. I even had a sky engineer try and tell me that my xbox cant be running in HD cos i wasnt using HDMI on my TV. He was talking out of his arse, i use a HD cable for FFS just because it isnt running through HDMI dosnt mean it isnt in HD. PC's have been running HD for years through PC monitors. My HD sky+ does run through HDMI however.

Ive got a PS3, a 360, an old xbox and a wii, and 3 of em havnt been switched on in over 6 months... guess which gets beasted... The PS3! I honestly dont think anything can stand up to it, to say there arent many games aint a big lie... But those available are mind bogglingly good,Final Fantasy, killzone 2 and metal gear 4 make xbox games look so dated! And its reliable, and quiet, the xbox is noisy as hell, it does my head in! coupled with rrod and overheating.. I love some of my games for it but rarely play em just cos these factors bug me so much.
